Scope of Work: The Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA) is a six-week program that prepares newly arrived refugee youth to succeed at their grade level in the New York City public school system. Up to 130 students from ages 5 – 21 from over 20 countries will participate in academic, creative arts, physical education classes and field trips on Fridays. The IRC is seeking an Electives Teacher to create and implement classes for Upper School (Grades 6-12). Possible topics may include a film watching and critique curriculum, or other subjects as desired by the NYSA instructional leadership.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or related field preferred; Master’s degree in education or related field preferred
  • Classroom teaching experience in New York City public schools or another school system strongly preferred
  • Experience with curriculum creation strongly desired
  • Experience in film or film education or other elective topic strongly desired
  • Professional experience teaching social-emotional learning to youth is strongly desired
  • Experience teaching English Language Learners/multilingual learners strongly desired
  • Experience working with refugee and/or immigrant populations strongly desired
  • Strong relationship building and classroom management skills strongly desired
  • Highly organized, dependable, responsive, and collaborative work style
  • Strength in cultural humility-building
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Fluency in written and spoken English required.
  • Second language proficiency in a relevant language (Arabic, Dari, Farsi, French, Fulani, Haitian Creole, Russian, Spanish, Ukrainian)
  • All hiring is contingent on passing background checks and submission of an annual physical form.
  • If the school is located at a New York City Public School site, additional fingerprinting may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in mandatory school programing.
  • Participate in collaborative planning sessions, all staff training and program meetings.
  • Plan a 6-week culturally- and developmentally-responsive curriculum for 6-12 grade multilingual learners.
  • Submit daily lesson plans, slide decks, and materials weekly in advance of the date of instruction
  • Perform formative, and post-assessments to inform planning and instruction.
  • Serve as a focal point in the classroom for peer mentors, providing guidance and direction on how they can best support student learning and well being
  • Lead classroom climate in accordance with Academy philosophy and protocols
  • Engage in instructional coaching cycles and participate in scheduled meetings
  • Record student observations and Complete the All-Staff program evaluation
  • Review student progress and maintain student data bodies of evidence
  • Complete all required reports on time.
  • Plan for, incorporate, and support volunteer Peer Mentors as they support classroom instruction
  • Substitute as needed for colleagues' classes
  • Pending demand, provide early and/or after-care supervision to a cohort of students
  • Complete report cards for each student
  • Comply with all IRC policies and protocols
  • Other duties as assigned.
