Micro-Robotics Engineer

Westinghouse NuclearMadison, WI
40d$75 - $100Hybrid

About The Position

We are seeking an accomplished Micro-Robotics Engineer to join our team at Westinghouse. You will specialize in the development and deployment of micro-scale robotics systems tailored for underwater Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) applications. Underwater EDM involves precision machining of subsea structures, such as repairing or fabricating components in deep water environments using electrical discharges for material removal without physical contact - ideal for non-invasive operations on offshore platforms, pipelines or underwater habitats. In support of multi-point underwater EDM machining you will design, prototype, and test micro-robotic systems that automate EDM processes in submerged conditions. You will create waterproof precision actuators and tools for micro-scale machining of hard materials, ensuring reliability in radiation environments. You will collaborate with teams to integrate robotics with EDM equipment, optimizing for accuracy, efficiency, and safety. You will be involved in hands-on fabrication, simulation, and field testing to push the boundaries of micro-precision manufacturing. You will report to the Senior Manager of Reactor Components Upgrades in Field Engineering.

Requirements

  • Must hold a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or robotics engineering
  • 7-10 years of experience working in a similar role in a robotics-focused company
  • Expertise in micro-robotics and engineering is required - you will combine expertise in micro-robotics (manipulating robots at millimeters or smaller scales) with underwater engineering challenges, including pressure resistance.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or have permanent resident status (sponsorship not available).

Responsibilities

  • System Design and Prototyping: Lead the conceptual design and CAD modeling of micro-robotic actuators, manipulators and end-effectors optimized for underwater EDM processes, ensuring compatibility with pressures up to 40 PSIG submerged.
  • EDM Integration: Develop and integrate micro-EDM toolheads into robotic platforms, including electrode design, power delivery systems (e.g. pulsed DC for spark generation), and dielectric fluid management to prevent arcing issues in conductive underwater conditions.
  • Control and Autonomy: Implement guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) algorithms for precise positioning and operation of micro-robots, using encoders and cameras to ensure repeatable alignment of robotic heads.
  • Conduct design reviews, troubleshoot system issues and help scale production form prototypes.
  • Perform inspections using measuring tools, analyze data from EDM processes and implement improvements for efficiency and quality control.
  • Program and improve EDM parameters for micro-precision operations, such as wire EDM or sinker EDM, using robotic automation to achieve tight tolerances and complex shapes in submerged environments.
  • Build and test prototypes in lab and field settings, including simulation of underwater conditions, failure analysis and iteration for manufacturability and reliability.
  • Travel occasionally for field testing or collaboration at restoration, manufacturing sites.
  • Collaborate with vendors to source materials and manufacturers for production models.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive Health and Income Protection Benefits
  • 401(k) Savings Plan
  • Paid Vacations for Qualifying Positions
