About The Position

Join our team as a Meter Technician/Specialist and play a key role in ensuring accurate utility billing for our community! You'll be responsible for reading, installing, and maintaining meters while providing excellent service to customers. If you enjoy working independently, solving problems, and being part of a supportive team, we'd love to hear from you! The Meter Technician/Specialist Installs, maintenance, water meters, boxes, and meter interface units. Connects, reconnects, and disconnects service at the meter. Disconnects delinquent accounts, locking and assisting in pulling meters when necessary. Assists in performing meter tests on 5/8" and 1" meters. Identify and report suspected theft of service to supervisor.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
  • Six months general work experience
  • Must obtain a Class "D" Water Operator License from TCEQ within two years of hire date.
  • Class D Water Distribution License from TCEQ.
  • Four years general work experience.
  • Two years experience in meter maintenance and water systems operations.
  • Class C Water Distribution Operator License from TCEQ.
  • Six years general work experience.
  • Four years' experience in meter maintenance and water system operations
  • Knowledge of basic math.
  • Computer knowledge necessary to operate hand held computer.
  • Skilled with tools necessary to replace and/or repair meters.
  • Computer literate.
  • Ability to read and write legibly.
  • Ability to read meters and obtain correct reading.
  • Must get along appropriately with co-workers and the public.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects, to stoop and to bend.

Nice To Haves

  • Six months experience in meter maintenance and water system operations
  • Experience with Automatic Reading Systems and/or Handheld Computers.
  • Prior supervisory experience.
  • One-year experience with Automatic Reading Systems and/or Hand Held Computers

Responsibilities

  • Connect and disconnect water service and utilize a handheld computer to obtain current readings.
  • Disconnect delinquent accounts for non-payment.
  • Performs rechecks and install locks on meters when water is illegally turned back on.
  • Assist in pulling meters when necessary.
  • Reconnect service after an outstanding balance is paid.
  • Assist in installing new meter if the meter was removed and provide billing personnel with new meter information.
  • Alerts supervisor of any suspected theft of service.
  • Utilize handheld computer to obtain readings for billing system.
  • Verifies low and high readings for accuracy.
  • Assist in solving meter problems detected by the drive-by unit.
  • Assist in changing meters, registers, meter interface devices, cutoffs, meter boxes and lids when necessary.
  • Utilize handheld computer to determine meter interface device is functioning correctly.
  • Assist in performing meter tests to determine if a meter is registering accurately.
  • Assist in moving fire hydrant meters and pulling warranty items for shipment.
  • Report damaged City property to supervisor.
  • Responsible for maintaining City property in their possession: truck, tools, handheld computer, and phone.
  • Utilize defensive driving training.
  • Keep supervisors aware of equipment and vehicle malfunctions.
  • Keeps vehicle clean inside and out.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.
  • Change meters, registers, meter interface devices, cutoffs, meter boxes and lids when necessary.
  • Assist in repairs of large meter unitized measuring elements to maintain reading accuracy.
  • Performs meter test to determine if meters are registering accurately.
  • Perform service line repairs.
  • Install and relocate fire hydrant meters.
  • Prepare pulled warranty items for shipment.
  • Operate AMR drive-by system.
  • Repair large meters unitized measuring elements to maintain reading accuracy.
  • Operate handheld computer to determine meter interface device is functioning properly.
  • Perform service line repairs when needed.
  • Install, relocate, and repair fire hydrant meters.
  • Assist Crew Leader in ensuring all work orders are completed.
  • Assist Crew Leader in ordering, receiving/issuing supplies, and vehicle maintenance.
  • Inspect personnel vehicles and tools for safety.
  • Assist Crew Leader in training personnel.
  • Perform Crew Leader duties in their absence.
