About The Position

This position provides oversight and direction for the medication diversion surveillance program. Oversees the investigation process of suspected medication diversion incidents. Leads and organizes the Organizations Medication Diversion Response and the Medication Safety and Security Committee. Participates in continuous improvement, education, and planning activities. Requirements

  • Minimum of one (1) of the following required: Bachelor's degree in nursing.
  • Current Montana RN License or a multi-state compact license with authorization to practice nursing within the state of Montana.
  • Minimum three (3) years' experience in clinical practice and demonstrated involvement with medication diversion prevention and/or medication use process improvement required.
  • RQI Provider (BLS) within 7 days of hire/transfer or before independent patient care, whichever comes first.

  • Proficiency in electronic medication tracking systems and inventory management systems (e.g., Pyxis, Omnicell) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Establishes and maintains a comprehensive surveillance program to detect potential medication diversion.
  • Optimizes the use of reports and functionality of available technology to prevent and identify medication diversion.
  • Develops audit processes and conducts regularly scheduled audits to identify medication diversion in the various medication use processes.
  • Performs trend analysis and assessments of available information to identify medication diversion activities.
  • Oversees/performs a preliminary investigation of identified potential medication diversion (e.g. controlled substance discrepancies, eyewitness reports, hot-line tips, etc.) in collaboration with Human Resources, the appropriate department manager (e.g. Nurse Manager) or physician leader, within established timelines.
  • Compiles and evaluates the findings from the preliminary investigation and determines if potential diversion exists.
  • Coordinates with Human Resources, the department manager / physician leader if immediate action must be taken (e.g. impaired employee).
  • Works collaboratively in determining next steps after a preliminary investigation and coordinates these activities
  • Completes and maintains documentation of all investigational activities and actions.
  • Presents findings to appropriate leadership and stakeholders.
  • Identifies opportunities for continued improvement in detecting and preventing medication diversion and discusses these with the Director and/or other applicable stakeholders.
  • Provides leadership and actively participates in multidisciplinary educational activities involving medication diversion.
  • Assists in the development and delivery of annual training and education involving medication diversion.
  • Assures that departmental and institutional policies related to medication diversion are accurate and current
  • Participates in both short and long-term planning for the department.
