About The Position

The Medical Technologist Lead - Generalist provides advanced technical expertise and day-to-day operational support within the hospital laboratory. This position functions as a senior technologist responsible for performing a full range of testing across all major disciplines while serving as a resource and mentor to other staff. The Lead Technologist assists the Laboratory Manager in maintaining regulatory compliance, ensuring quality performance, and promoting efficient, high-standard laboratory operations. Performs venipunctures and obtains/prepares blood specimens in accordance with Monroe County Hospital policies and procedures. This is Lead Role requiring both bench duties and administrative support, designed for a hands-on, experienced generalist who demonstrates leadership and initiative in a collaborative rural hospital environment

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in medical technology, biology, chemistry, or a related scientific field.
  • National certification required (ASCP, AMT, or AAB as MT/MLS).
  • Minimum 3 - 4 years of clinical laboratory experience, including generalist work across multiple disciplines.
  • Strong working knowledge of laboratory instrumentation, quality control, and regulatory standards (CLIA, CAP, DNV, or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated ability to train and mentor staff and students.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in phlebotomy for all patient age groups.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior 2-3 years' experience in a lead or senior technologist capacity is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of clinical laboratory processes is preferred.
  • Experience working in healthcare or clinical laboratory setting is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and specialized testing in chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, blood bank, and other assigned areas.
  • Evaluate and verify test results for accuracy, precision, and timeliness.
  • Perform and document required quality control, instrument maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Conduct specimen collection, processing, and referral for send-out testing.
  • Maintain accurate and complete laboratory records and logs.
  • Adhere to all safety, infection control, and regulatory requirements.
  • Serve as a technical resource and provide guidance to other technologists, technicians, and students.
  • Assist the Laboratory Manager with daily workflow coordination, staffing assignments, and workload balance.
  • Participate in staff training, competency assessment, and continuing education activities.
  • Monitor and communicate issues related to turnaround times (TAT), specimen integrity, and testing quality.
  • Support supply and reagent inventory management; ensure stock levels meet operational needs.
  • Oversee and document proficiency testing performance and assist in corrective actions.
  • Contribute to preparation for regulatory inspections and ongoing compliance activities.
  • Assist with policy and procedure review, updates, and implementation.
  • Promote teamwork, accountability, and service excellence within the department
