About The Position

Charles R. Drew University is located in the Watts-Willowbrook area of South Los Angeles and was founded in 1966 in the wake of the Watts uprising. CDU was founded to address inadequate medical care in the region and to provide equitable medical education opportunities for underrepresented students. CDU is strongly invested in the local and regional community. The university leads multiple partnerships and programs to provide equitable healthcare resources in a variety of South Los Angeles neighborhoods. The Medical Student Support Coordinator provides comprehensive academic, professional, and personal support to third and fourth-year medical students during their clinical training years. This position serves as a primary resource for students navigating the transition to clinical rotations, residency applications, and career planning. The coordinator works closely with students, faculty, clinical sites, and administrative offices to ensure student success and wellbeing throughout the clinical curriculum.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree in higher education, counseling, student affairs, healthcare administration, or related field strongly preferred
  • Minimum 2-3 years of experience in academic advising, student services, or related field in higher education
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with ability to build rapport with diverse student populations
  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities with attention to detail
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and ability to handle sensitive situations with discretion
  • Proficiency with student information systems and standard office technology
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong commitment to student success, diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Knowledge of student development theory and best practices in academic advising

Responsibilities

  • Student Support & Advising Serve as primary point of contact for 3rd and 4th year medical students regarding academic support, career advising, and personal concerns
  • Provide individual advising sessions to assist students with clinical rotation planning, scheduling, and problem-solving
  • Monitor student progress and proactively identify students who may benefit from additional support or intervention
  • Coordinate support services for students experiencing academic difficulties, personal challenges, or professional development needs
  • Facilitate peer mentoring programs connecting senior students with their peers
  • Clinical Education Coordination Assist with coordination and scheduling of clinical rotations across hospital and community-based sites
  • Serve as liaison between students and clinical sites to address concerns, resolve conflicts, and ensure positive learning experiences
  • Track and manage clinical requirements, immunizations, background checks, and credentialing documentation
  • Coordinate visiting student rotations and away electives, including application processing and logistics
  • Residency & Career Support Guide students through the residency application process, including timeline management, specialty selection, and application strategy
  • Coordinate residency application support services, including ERAS preparation, personal statement review, and interview preparation
  • Organize residency information sessions, specialty panels, and career exploration events
  • Maintain resource library of residency program information and career planning materials
  • Support students participating in the Match process and provide guidance for those requiring additional career planning
  • Programming & Workshops Develop and implement programming specific to 3rd and 4th year student needs, including clinical skills workshops, professionalism seminars, and wellness initiatives
  • Coordinate orientation programs for students transitioning to clinical years
  • Organize graduation-related activities and ceremonies in collaboration with appropriate offices
  • Administrative & Collaborative Functions Maintain accurate records and documentation of student interactions, interventions, and outcomes
  • Collaborate with Associate/Assistant Deans, Course Directors, Student Services staff, and other campus partners
  • Participate in Student Affairs team meetings and institutional committees as assigned
  • Contribute to assessment and continuous improvement of student support services
  • Prepare reports and data analysis regarding student progress, support needs, and program effectiveness
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
