Medical Instrument Technician (Ultrasound)- GS-0649-09 - Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center, Dept. of Radiology , Fort Cavazos, TX Fort Cavazos is located in the beautiful 'hill and lake' country of Central Texas between Killeen and Copperas Cove and is approximately 60 miles north of the capital city of Austin, 50 miles south of Waco, 160 miles south of Dallas, and 150 miles north of San Antonio. Founded in 1942, this 340-sq.-mile military base is the Army's Premier Installation to train and deploy heavy forces. A 214,968 acre installation, Fort Cavazos is now the largest active duty armored post in the U.S. Armed Forces and the only post in the United States capable of stationing and training two Armored Divisions.   • In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below.
  • Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

  • Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing a variety of ultrasound examinations, setting up or maintaining ultrasound equipment, and educating patients or staff. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
  • OR Education: Two full years of graduate level education or a master's degree in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Ultrasound or Sonography.
  • OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.
  • Foreign Education : If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a wide variety of complex ultrasound examinations such as Abdominal, Renal, Pelvic, Obstetric, Carotid, Venous, Vascular, Testicular, Thyroid, Breast, and various Biopsies to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of disease or injury.
  • Independently perform scans which illustrate normal and abnormal anatomy.
  • Advise the radiologist of urgent preliminary diagnostic evaluations and notifies them of studies requiring their immediate attention while the patient is undergoing examination.
  • Use scanner to properly position probes and other equipment, fix point of entry, determine depth and direction of penetration and location within the body locate disease sites, identify position and functioning or response of organs, etc.
  • Conduct hands-on training and technical oversight of other technicians.
  • Prepare reports on examinations, equipment status and utilization, workload, supply status and consumption, and related matters.
