About The Position

The Medical Editor is a professional with a great editing skillset who enjoys working in a dynamic medical communications agency environment. This individual plays a pivotal role in Real Chemistry’s Medical Communications division by enhancing the clarity, accuracy, and impact of our medical deliverables. By meticulously reviewing, editing, and verifying a wide array of medical content, the Medical Editor ensures our content resonates accurately, compliantly, and effectively across various media types and platforms. This role is instrumental in upholding our commitment to the highest quality standards. The Medical Editor is assigned as a key member of project teams that work together to deliver educational tactics and communication materials to our clients. This individual is expected to gain knowledge and mastery of client product brand guides, internal and client styles, and gain an understanding of therapeutic areas based on project team assignments. The Medical Editor is asked to advise project teams on appropriate process standards and timing to deliver the best results possible. The Medical Editor is part of a larger editing team that works closely to back each other up during peak work times. This is a hybrid role, based in any of our US offices—including New York City, Boston, Chicago, Carmel, Lambertville or San Francisco—or remotely within the US, depending on team and business needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree, or demonstrated equivalent experience preferred
  • 2+ years’ experience in professional/technical editing and/or direct medical communications agency or pharmaceutical company editing experience preferred
  • Proven ability or ability to learn to edit materials in both American and British English and according to recognized industry editing standards (eg, AMA, Vancouver, APA)
  • Advanced proficiency in editing complex deliverables in multiple formats, including marking up PDF files electronically using Adobe Acrobat Pro, using track changes in Microsoft Word, and familiarity with digital routing/commenting platforms (eg, Adobe Workfront Proof, Ziflow)
  • Proper understanding of medical terminology and copyright requirements, and experience conducting thorough fact-checking and source verification
  • Keen interest to apply technology and AI best practices to enhance editing capabilities

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the lead editor on 2-5 client accounts/brands depending on the scope of work
  • Review, proofread, and edit all materials for sense, organization, grammar, spelling, punctuation, consistency, flow, style, formatting, clarity, and accuracy
  • Check data in tables, graphs, figures, and copy against original sources, ensuring that content is accurate and without typos, and that all claims are properly referenced
  • Support deliverable submissions, as needed, including linking claims back to respective references in Veeva Vault (or other client submission platform, as appropriate), as well as publication (eg, manuscripts, posters) submissions to medical congresses/journals
  • Attend and actively participate in all kick-offs, status, and other relevant cross-functional account team meetings and working sessions
  • Advise cross-functional account teams on process for editing and delivering compliant tactics to clients, and supports Medical Writers in ensuring that all materials conform to FDA/EMA regulations and other relevant industry guidelines
  • Remains current on industry editing standards (eg, AMA, Vancouver, APA), maintains style guides for all assigned accounts, and communicates new editing improvements and client needs to Medical Editing Team and respective cross-functional account teams
  • Support the overall Medical Editing Team as a back-up editor during peak work times
  • Work occasional nonstandard work hours in accordance with project needs, deadlines, deliverables, and urgent client requests, which could result in evening or weekend work
  • Perform any other duties as reasonably assigned; duties and responsibilities may be removed, modified, or added by leadership at any time as business or operations require
