Writes and edits medical and scientific information to create clear, relevant, engaging content that educates the public, empowers patients and caregivers, and supports health care professionals. This highly skilled role combines excellent editorial judgment with strong technical proficiency in digital publishing. Working closely with Medical Editors and other subject matter experts, this position ensures ACS’s cancer information is accurate, understandable, accessible, and optimized for how users search, navigate, and consume content. This position plays a key role in the creation of accurate, relevant, and timely medical content, which is critical to protecting organizational reputation, ensuring compliance, and reducing risk. This is a remote position

Requirements

  • Minimum Degree Required: Bachelor's Degree in English, Journalism , or other related field
  • Minimum of 3 years' medical writing and web-focused editorial work
  • Writing/ Editing: Proficiency in developmental and substantive editing, copy editing, and proofing content, preferably medical content. Experience writing and editing web content. Knowledge of health literacy best practices. Ability to turn complex subjects into easy-to-understand content for a lay audience. Ability to collaborate on content with other editors, writers, and medical professionals. Ability to make editorial decisions to balanc e medical accuracy, user needs , and digital best practices.
  • Technology: Proficiency with Windows operating system and Office suite software. Proficiency with WCMS (Web Content Management Systems) to author content, preferably AEM (Adobe Experience Manager). Familiarity with general website best practices for SEO, user experience, and accessibility. Understanding of basic HTML and general web development concepts.
  • Soft skills: Creative thinker. Careful attention to detail and accuracy in all work. Excellent time management and organizational skills to track projects and meet deadlines. Ability to prioritize and make decisions to balance multiple projects. Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with the team members, other ACS teams, and vendors.

  • Preferred Degree: Master's Degree
  • Familiarity with AMA editorial style preferred.
  • Adult learning knowledge
  • Familiarity with project management and collaboration software, preferably Monday.

Responsibilities

  • Write, e dit , and refine cancer information for clarity, accuracy, readability, and voice, ensuring it meets the needs of non-medical and lower-literacy audiences.
  • Create, update, publish, and retire web pages on cancer.org, ensuring content is current, accurate , and well-organized.
  • Collaborate with Medical Editors, SEO, and editorial staff to shape editorial strategy, maintain consistent style, address content gaps, and align with user search behavior.
  • Optimize content for web usability, including formatting for easy scanning, logical flow, use of inline links, and adherence to UX and design standards.
  • Identify opportunities to e nhance content through multimedia and cross-promotional elements, such as videos, images, interactives, and resource links.
  • Monitor and improve site quality, identifying and resolving issues like broken links, typos, missing metadata, and formatting problems.
