About The Position

The Department of Emergency Medicine, one of the largest in the country, seeks a dynamic and strategic physician leader to serve as Medical Director. Our faculty staff the hospitals within the Mount Sinai Health System (the Mount Sinai Hospital, Mount Sinai Queens, Mount Sinai Morningside, Mount Sinai West, Mount Sinai Brooklyn, Mount Sinai South Nassau, as well as affiliated hospitals including Elmhurst Hospital Center, Queens Hospital Center, and Richmond University Medical Center. The Emergency Medicine Service Line has almost 240 faculty, more than 100 physician assistants and nurse practitioners, and treat more than 600K patients annually. The Department is ranked number 3 in research funding from the National Institutes of Health, is home to 3 emergency medicine residencies, 8 fellowships (including one in Pediatric Emergency Medicine), and is affiliated with 2 pediatric residencies. Mount Sinai Brooklyn is a community hospital located in Midwood, Brooklyn. The Emergency Department spans 6,865 square feet and manages an annual patient volume of approximately 40,465, with an admission rate of about 23%. The Medical Director will develop short and long-term plans for on-going improvement of the clinical, operational, and administrative quality of the department. This role will include clinical leadership, quality assurance, compliance, administrative oversight, staff supervision, and clinical time commitment. This individual will champion high-quality, patient-centered care, and drive alignment across diverse practice environments.

Requirements

  • MD or DO degree from an accredited institution.
  • Board-certified in Emergency Medicine or eligible for medical licensure in the State of New York.
  • At least 3 years of clinical operations/administrative experience.
  • Experience in hospital-wide flow, emergency care optimization, and cross-site integration.
  • Demonstrated excellence in communication, strategic thinking, and organizational leadership.

  • Advanced degree in Healthcare Administration, Business, or Public Health (MBA, MHA, MPH, or equivalent).

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Mount Sinai Brooklyn Directors of ED Nursing and Administration/Operations, as well as Emergency Medicine System Operations, Quality and Nursing leadership to initiate and implement clinical initiatives to improve key clinical flow and quality indicators (i.e. stroke initiatives, introduction of clinical pathways, cardiology collaborations, etc.).
  • Responsible for reviewing the quality and flow metrics related to new initiatives and developing countermeasures to address areas of concern.
  • Provide leadership in advancing both the clinical and operational quality of the clinical environment of the Mount Sinai Brooklyn Emergency Department.
  • Working with MSB hospital and multidisciplinary ED leadership, you will provide overall direction to the Department of Emergency Medicine at Mount Sinai Brooklyn while acting as the key liaison for interdisciplinary initiatives.
  • Partner with administrative leaders to jointly develop and manage the budget, staffing, and financial operations of the MSB ED.
  • Oversee the bi-annual policy process including ongoing review, revision, implementation and dissemination.
  • Actively participate in investigations involving clinical care, including debriefings and root cause analyses (RCA).
  • Meet regularly with the Vice Chair of Clinical Operations, both as part of a Medical Directors group and individually, to provide meaningful updates and receive guidance on operational and strategic issues.
  • Assist in responding to patient complaints and serve as the primary liaison to the Office of Patient Relations.
  • Help implement initiatives aimed at improving patient satisfaction and addressing concerns.
  • Responsible for overseeing the review, revision, and dissemination of departmental policies.
