Department Denver Sheriffs Job Summary Under general supervision, provides nursing support with various functions such as; screening, medication administration, treatments, vitals, and vaccinations. Assists the staff with clinical clerical functions. Ensures smooth work and patient flow within the Denver Sheriff Health Services. The Correctional Care nursing staff provides clinical care at either Downtown Detention Center or the Denver County Jail. These environments of care have a higher level of clinical acuity and environmental hazard than inpatient and ambulatory nursing settings based on the nature of the facility. The detention centers employ a high level of security, which impacts daily working conditions, including both personal and institutional safety and clinical operations. Environmental awareness, critical thinking, and decisive, decision-making skills are required in the correctional care setting.

Requirements

• Certificate Program Certificate from a clinical Medical Assistant school Required or Accredited program of Licensed Practical Nursing with an active LPN license Required
• Completion of a 160 hour Externship Required or 6 months direct patient care experience in an outpatient setting Required
• BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association or American Red Cross Required
• Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures.
• Knowledge of and the ability to use medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care.
• Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
• Skill in assisting in a variety of treatments as directed.
• Skill in taking vital signs.
• Skill in maintaining records and recording test results.
• Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, employees, physicians and the public.
• Ability to maintain quality control standards.
• Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
• Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.
• Ability to communicate clearly.
• Ability to learn and be proficient in electronic health record and paper record documentation.
• Utilize equipment and technology safely to provide patient care, upon completion of training and competency for applicable clinical area.
• Demonstrates sensitivity in dealing with the psychiatric patient population which requires very specific communication skills as directed by the plan of care and ability to deal with milieu management.
• Knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field.
• Ability to observe and document the patient's behavior.

Responsibilities

• Accurately and efficiently takes vital signs and basic historical patient data. Identifies abnormal patient findings. Communicates patient concerns or significant changes in patient’s health status to provider or nurse. (20%)
• Provides safe administration of medications and immunizations (oral, IM, subcutaneous, and/or intradermal); obtains EKGs, orders appropriate tests as directed by provider; and schedules specialty and follow-up appointments as directed by provider. (10%)
• Prepares patients for examinations, assists with examinations, cast or splint applications, minor procedures a variety of other medically related tasks within their scope of knowledge. (10%)
• Documents accurately and appropriately in-patient medical record. (10%)
• Reports change in patient condition to appropriate health care provider in a timely manner. (10%)
• Prepares exam and treatment rooms with necessary instruments/supplies. Prepares and maintains clinical and office supplies and equipment for treatments, including sterilization and restocking of exam and treatment rooms. (10%)
• Maintains a safe environment by practicing sound safety and infection control practices according to agency policies and procedures. Helps to identify safety and infection control issues. (10%)
• Engages in performance appraisal on a routine basis by accepting and providing constructive feedback and integrates feedback into practice. Participates in competency reviews as required by department. Assumes accountability for achieving goals set jointly with the manager for the next evaluation period. Participates in the peer review process. (10%)
• May perform phlebotomy and perform various laboratory procedures after competency verified. Maintains safe collection and processing of laboratory specimens. (10%)
