TEMP Summer Medical Assistant

About The Position

This is a temporary summer position that will float between our clinics to provide coverage for Medical Assistant PTO and call-ins. Most clinic locations are within Grand Rapids, MI, with occasional coverage needed at our Barry Health Center (Hastings, MI) and Montcalm Health Center (Greenville, MI). Overview of Position: Under the direction of the RN Supervisor or Site Manager, the Medical Assistant supports patients by actively participating in the interdisciplinary care team and assists providers in delivering medical services. This role requires regular travel between clinics to meet business needs. The Medical Assistant must adhere to organizational policies, procedures, the Code of Ethics, and all licensing and accreditation standards pertinent to the position, embodying the organization's mission in all actions and communications. Standard business hours are Monday through Friday; however, occasional early morning, evening, and weekend work may be necessary to fulfill essential job functions.

Requirements

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) / CPR certification.
  • Professional conduct with providers, peers, families, and the community.
  • Ability to perform routine healthcare tasks, enter data, and generate reports in the EHR.
  • Effective coaching, training, and mentoring skills.
  • Sensitivity in dealing with patients undergoing treatment in stressful situations.
  • Ability to follow directions and work effectively with professional and paraprofessional staff.
  • Exceptional customer service skills.
  • Ability to maintain effective and organized systems to ensure timely patient flow.
  • Basic typing skills and proficiency with computer software systems.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Possession of a valid Michigan driver's license with a clear driving record; must be at least 18 years old with three years of driving experience and no restrictions.
  • Reliable transportation is required due to regular travel between clinics.
  • Certification as a Medical Assistant through one of the following organizations: American Association of Medical Assistants (CMA) American Medical Technologists (RMA) National Healthcareer Association (CCMA) National Center for Competency Testing (NCMA) American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA) National Association for Health Professionals (NRCMA)

Nice To Haves

  • 1-2 years of previous medical assisting experience preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
  • In lieu of specified education and experience requirements, a proven capability to perform the essential functions of the job, demonstrated by an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or relevant work experience, may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Travel between clinics to address staffing and business needs.
  • Prepare patient charts by reviewing population health management systems, updating incomplete orders and referrals, and gathering necessary information such as hospital records; record information in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
  • Manage clinic flow for the assigned care team.
  • Greet patients, assess their needs, and accompany them to examination rooms.
  • Follow rooming procedures, including inquiring about recent emergency room or hospital visits, taking vital signs, and completing screening tests and health maintenance orders as identified during chart preparation; record findings in the EHR.
  • Conduct medication reviews, removing short-term medications such as antibiotics from the medication module.
  • Prepare for and assist providers with examinations and procedures, ensuring proper cleanup afterward.
  • Implement provider orders, including blood draws, electrocardiograms (ECGs), laboratory tests, dressings, treatments, refills, and routine testing procedures; document results in the EHR as appropriate.
  • Prepare specimens for transportation, complete necessary forms, and arrange for transport.
  • File patient information and assist with medical records responsibilities.
  • Administer high-risk medications and injections according to established program or site guidelines.
  • Assist with the vaccine program, including storage, handling, administration, and documentation.
  • Assist nurses and providers with incoming patient healthcare information.
  • Adhere to universal precautions and organizational policies.
  • Understand and comply with the organization's compliance standards as outlined in corporate policies, the Code of Conduct, and the Conflict of Interest Policy.
  • Stay informed about pertinent federal, state, and organizational regulations, laws, and policies as they evolve.
  • Precept medical assistant apprentices, externs, or new employees as necessary.
  • Represent the organization at community events, job fairs, and recruitment events as requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
