The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State’s legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. GRADE 15 This position offers a salary range of $29.83/hour - $42.03/hour, with potential for advancement up to $46.41/hour based on qualifications, equity, and hiring guidelines. Initial salary offers are determined by qualifications, experience, and available budget, and typically do not exceed $42.03/hour. LOCATION OF POSITION Office of the Attorney General Consumer Protection Division 200 St. Paul Place Baltimore, Maryland 21202 Main Purpose of Job The OAG is seeking qualified applicants for a contractual Mediator position shared between the Mediation and Health Education and Advocacy Units in the Consumer Protection Division. A hybrid remote telework and three days in-office schedule option is available per applicable policies and procedures. The Consumer Protection Division (CPD) enforces Maryland’s laws against unfair, abusive, and deceptive trade practices involving consumer goods, consumer services, health-related goods and services, real estate, credit, and debt collection. Through investigations and legal action, CPD works to stop illegal business practices, secure restitution for harmed consumers, and deter future misconduct. The Mediation Unit assists consumers in resolving disputes with businesses and is staffed by a Director, Deputy Director, 12 Mediation Supervisors, one Mediator, five administrative staff, and approximately 30 volunteers and interns. The Health Education and Advocacy Unit provide mediation and education services related to billing, insurance coverage, medical records, and medical equipment, and is comprised of a Director, Deputy Director, 8 Ombudsmen, 2 Case Coordinators, 1 Administrator, and approximately 7 volunteers and interns. Each year, the units handle between 12,000 and 14,000 consumer complaints and manage all other public inquiries directed at the Consumer Protection Division. Last year alone, they responded to more than 60,000 inquiries via phone calls and email. POSITION DUTIES The Mediator plays a key role in ensuring the quality and timeliness of the mediation process.
