About The Position

We are looking for a Media Relations Intern to fill a paid 10-week summer internship with TNC’s Southern U.S. Division Marketing and Communications team. The intern can be an undergraduate student or recent graduate (between 2024 and 2025). This position is home-based in the United States with preference to candidates in Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. The internship will provide a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between academics and real-world work. We offer an orientation, professional networking opportunities, and real-world work experience. The Media Relations Intern will be responsible for supporting TNC’s Southern U.S. Division Marketing and Communications team by helping build and launch an earned media monitoring and reporting process through Meltwater. TNC’s Southern U.S. Division is comprised of Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. This effort will directly contribute to the success of TNC’s media relations and brand reputation management in the Southern Division and beyond. The Media Relations Intern will also play a key role in providing new perspectives and insights on media relations projects and opportunities. In collaboration with the Media Relations Manager and Media Relations Specialist, the Intern will contribute to story ideas, media lists, press materials, and following news trends. The Intern will report to the Southern U.S. Division Media Relations Manager.

Requirements

  • HS Diploma or equivalent.
  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program of communications, marketing, or related field, or a recent graduate with a degree in one of these or a related field.
  • Knowledge of/interest in journalism, public relations or a related field
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience in research, writing, and editing
  • Close attention to detail
  • Access to a reliable internet connection

Nice To Haves

  • Coursework and/or exposure related to communications/marketing
  • Self-starter, taking initiative, and demonstrating confidence to ask questions and seek input
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated
  • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet software, with the ability to construct and produce reports
  • Knowledge of/interest in earned media tracking, analytics and reporting
  • Knowledge of/interest in Meltwater or other media-based software
  • Knowledge of/interest in researching and building media lists
  • Personal passion for preserving and protecting the natural world with a belief in the mission, principles, and values of The Nature Conservancy

Responsibilities

  • Research and learn from internal experts about strategic approaches to media monitoring and reporting through Meltwater platform
  • Support efforts to build and launch a Southern U.S. Division earned media monitoring process and news alert distribution
  • Support efforts to develop and launch an earned media reporting process for the Southern U.S. Division
  • Conduct research to maintain up-to-date lists of media contacts and coverage areas
  • Collaborate with TNC colleagues on media projects and story opportunities
