Position Overview The Mechanical Test Technician will support mechanical testing activities for utility-scale solar structures, components, and assemblies. This entry-level role focuses on executing laboratory and field-based mechanical tests, collecting and documenting data, maintaining test equipment, and assisting engineers in validating product performance, durability, and reliability. The position offers hands-on experience with structural and fatigue testing in a fast-growing renewable energy industry. Requirements

  • Associate’s degree or technical certificate in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Technology, Engineering Technology, or a related field OR Equivalent hands-on mechanical or laboratory experience
  • Basic understanding of mechanical systems, fasteners, structures, and materials
  • Ability to read and follow engineering drawings, test procedures, and work instructions
  • Familiarity with basic hand tools and shop equipment
  • Comfortable working with computers for data entry and documentation
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and work around large mechanical structures
  • Willingness to work in a lab or outdoor test environment, occasionally in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to stand, bend, and work on test setups for extended periods
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy
  • Good communication skills and ability to follow instructions
  • Self-motivated with a willingness to learn and ask questions
  • Team-oriented mindset with a safety-first attitude

Responsibilities

  • Set up and execute mechanical tests such as static load, cyclic/fatigue, torque, shear, and pull-out testing on solar structural components and assemblies
  • Assist with test fixture assembly, instrumentation setup, and sensor installation (e.g., load cells, LVDTs, strain gauges)
  • Operate mechanical test equipment including hydraulic frames, electromechanical test machines, and data acquisition systems
  • Monitor tests in progress and respond to abnormal conditions or failures safely
  • Record test data accurately and maintain clear, organized test logs
  • Assist in preparing test reports, summaries, photo documentation and test-related documents
  • Verify test configurations match approved test plans and procedures
  • Perform routine maintenance, calibration checks, and troubleshooting of test equipment
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized laboratory and test area
  • Support fabrication or modification of test fixtures and test samples using basic shop tools
  • Follow all lab safety procedures, lock-out/tag-out practices, and safe material handling requirements
  • Assist with risk assessments and pre-test safety reviews
  • Work closely with Mechanical Test Engineers and Design Engineers to support product validation efforts
  • Participate in continuous improvement of test methods, fixtures, and workflows
  • Learn applicable industry standards (ASTM, ISO, IEC, UL) relevant to solar and structural testing
