Job Summary: We are seeking a Mechanical Designer III who will lead mechanical design efforts for switchgear, panelboards, and electrical power distribution equipment. This senior-level role is responsible for developing complex designs, improving design standards, mentoring junior designers, and ensuring that product designs meet quality, manufacturability, and customer requirements. Mechanical Designer III contributes significantly to engineering process improvements and cross-functional collaboration.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Mechanical Design, Engineering Technology, or related field; bachelor's degree preferred
  • 7–10+ years of mechanical design experience, ideally in electrical equipment, industrial products, or custom manufacturing
  • Advanced proficiency with SolidWorks, AutoCAD, PDM, and 3D modeling tools
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems, sheet metal design, GD&T, fabrication methods, and engineering standards
  • Proven ability to lead complex mechanical design projects from concept through release
  • Ability to interpret detailed customer specifications, electrical drawings, engineering schematics, and technical documentation
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to lead discussions, clarify requirements, and influence outcomes
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex mechanical, manufacturing, and quality issues independently
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint)

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing switchgear, panelboards, bus systems, enclosures, or power distribution equipment
  • Knowledge of NEC, UL, or other relevant industry standards
  • Experience with PDM/PLM systems, BOM creation, and change management processes
  • Background in renewable energy systems, battery storage, data centers, or EV charging infrastructure
  • Experience developing design guidelines, documentation, or training materials.
  • Strong leadership, mentoring, and project coordination abilities

Responsibilities

  • Lead the mechanical design of complex structures, bussing layouts, enclosures, and components for low- and medium-voltage electrical equipment.
  • Review, interpret, and clarify customer specifications, drawings, and project requirements; ensure designs meet all functional, safety, and compliance needs.
  • Create advanced 2D/3D models and detailed drawings using AutoCAD, SolidWorks, PDM, and other design tools.
  • Develop design standards, templates, and best practices to improve consistency, accuracy, and efficiency within the engineering department.
  • Evaluate materials, fabrication methods, and mechanical components to ensure manufacturability, cost-effectiveness, and performance.
  • Maintain expert-level knowledge of manufacturing processes (e.g., forming, punching, welding, machining, coating).
  • Serve as a technical resource for resolving complex design, manufacturing, quality, and field issues.
  • Participate in and often lead cross-functional teams focused on continuous improvement, quality enhancements, and cost-reduction initiatives.
  • Provide technical mentorship, training, and guidance to Mechanical Designer I & II team members.
  • Support new product development through concept design, prototyping, testing support, and documentation creation.
  • Assist with advanced design input for product and project quotations.
  • Stay current with industry technology, emerging energy markets, and new materials or manufacturing methods.
  • Follow company safety, quality, and housekeeping standards.
