About The Position

The Mechanical Design Engineer II supports the design-to-order (DTO) engineering process for IEM’s medium voltage and low voltage power distribution products. This role involves extensive 3D modeling and 2D drafting, creating and maintaining BOMs, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to meet project specifications and timelines. The Mechanical Design Engineer II builds on foundational engineering skills to contribute to project success while developing expertise in DTO project cycles, designing for manufacturability, and ensuring compliance with industry standards.

Requirements

  • BSME or equivalent required
  • 2-5+ years of experience in mechanical design, preferably in DTO or custom engineering.
  • Experience working in a design-to-order or custom engineering environment is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with medium voltage switchgear or low voltage switchgear, utility systems, or the power industry is preferred.
  • Exposure to sheet metal design is preferred.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or Pro E; Finite Element Analysis (FEA) experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge of IEEE/ANSI C37.20 and UL891/1558 design guidelines and NFPA70E are desirable.
  • Candidates with EIT certification on the path to Professional Engineer (PE) licensure are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Designing and customizing mechanical solutions to meet client-specific requirements, focusing on manufacturability and compliance with industry and internal standards.
  • Creating 3D models and 2D drawings, including client coordination drawings and fabrication documentation.
  • Creating and maintain BOMs for standard product line assemblies and DTO project workflow.
  • Supporting collaboration with clients, project managers, and internal teams to ensure designs are aligned with project goals and timelines.
  • Providing technical support during manufacturing and installation phases to ensure seamless project execution.
  • Review customer acceptance documentation for accuracy.
  • Ensure project deliverables are on time and indicate early when tasks are not achievable.
  • Ensure project designs comply with customer specifications, industry standards, manufacturability requirements, and internal quality benchmarks.
  • Conduct self-reviews and participate in peer reviews to maintain high-quality deliverables.
  • Support DTO workflow templating and automation initiatives to increase project throughput and reduce errors.
  • Support senior group engineers, manufacturing engineers and plant personnel to refine designs for manufacturability.
  • Work with manufacturing engineers to develop manufacturable design standards.
  • Facilitate communication between design and manufacturing teams across multiple sites to align processes.
