About The Position

Under supervision, to perform semiskilled tasks in the repair and maintenance of buses and a variety of motorized equipment; to inspect and service buses and other automotive equipment; to perform substitute bus driver service; and to do other related work as required.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • Four (4) years prior mechanical experience required, with preference given to candidates who have successfully completed trade school or community college preparation programs
  • Possess a valid Washington State CDL with proper endorsements
  • Ability to learn and use diagnostic equipment to diagnose mechanical difficulties
  • Knowledge of the principles of internal combustion engines (gas, diesel) and of the methods, tools, equipment, and materials used in the repair and maintenance of motor pool vehicles
  • Valid First Aid/CPR card
  • Successful Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation fingerprint clearance
  • I-9 employment eligibility in compliance with the Immigrations Reform and Control Act
  • HIV/HBV training (obtain within 60 days of hire date – District provided)
  • Human Resources new hire training (obtain within 60 days of hire date – District provided)
  • Knowledge of: Health assessment methods and practices
  • Methods, materials, equipment and tools used in the inspection, servicing, mainte­nance and repair of buses and other automotive equipment
  • Safe working methods and procedures
  • Ability to: Perform semiskilled functions in the inspection, servicing, maintenance and repair of buses and other motorized equipment
  • Identify common automotive parts, materials, tools and supplies
  • Effectively use standard hand tools and equipment commonly utilized in the maintenance, repair and servicing of buses and automotive equipment
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships
  • Persons performing service in this position classification will exert 50 to 75 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • Must have an adequate range of motion in the upper extremities
  • This type of work may involve ascending and descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and ramps, and will involve walking or standing for extended periods
  • Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate equipment and use hand tools, and handle and work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job
  • Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by weather may occasionally be experienced
  • Able to see, read and follow written instructions
  • Able to operate buses and motor vehicle

Responsibilities

  • Verify operational safety of equipment and devices such as brakes, clutch, lights, mirrors, glass, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, highway warning kits, horn, warning lights and buzzers, emergency exits, wipers, signs, tires, etc.
  • Operate lubrication equipment, hoist, compressor, battery charger, diagnostic equipment, headlight adjustment machine, alignment board, spark plug tester, drills, presses, air wrenches and other tools and equipment as required in the performance of assigned duties
  • Assist in cleaning and organization of the shop, parts room, and other maintenance facilities
  • Inspect buses and transportation vehicles to ensure against mechanical defects, malfunctions and potential safety hazards
  • Lubricate buses, automotive and other power equipment; replace defective lubrication fittings; perform oil and filter changes; fill, drain and flush gear box assembly; pack wheel bearings and complete air cleaner service
  • Inspect batteries for water level and corrosion
  • Repair and change tires, and maintain the proper inflation level of tires
  • Drain and refill crankcases
  • Inspect and fill gearboxes with lubricants
  • Replace light bulbs and fuses
  • Adjust and repair windows, seats and mirrors
  • Assist in disassembling, repairing and reassembling engines, transmissions and other major assemblies
  • Perform minor engine tune-up functions
  • Assist in the maintenance and repair of vehicle braking, steering, and electrical operating systems
  • Maintain a record of the service and the preventative maintenance tasks accomplished
  • Occasionally perform service as a substitute school bus driver
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by Transportation Supervisor and/or the lead mechanic
  • Adhere to federal and state laws and district regulations, policies, procedures and practices
  • Mandatory reporter for incidents of child abuse, harassment, intimidation, bullying, boundary invasions, fights, substance abuse etc.
  • Abide by employment provisions provided for in the collective bargaining agreement
  • Observe strict confidentiality regarding student information
  • Maintain regular punctual attendance
