The Mechanic Helper will assist the Fleet Technician in making repairs and performing preventative maintenance inspections on Division vehicles and equipment.

Requirements

  • A valid driver's license from state of residence.
  • Must obtain a valid Class A Commercial driver's license from state of residence within trial or probationary period after entering classification.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Previous experience as a Mechanic helper or a similar role is required.
  • Must successfully complete Physical Abilities Test.
  • Must successfully complete Placement/Performance Exercises.
  • Knowledge of vehicle repair.
  • Excellent mechanical skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions.
  • Ability to use power and hand tools.
  • Ability to read service manuals.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to complete assigned tasks in a timely manner.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification from a vocational school, technical institute or automotive program is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Fleet Technicians perform maintenance and repairs such as tune-ups and oil change, checks tires and brakes, replaces spark plugs and engages in other similar tasks.
  • Help Fleet Technicians with electrical systems such as replacing batteries, starters, and lights.
  • May assist in performing body work on automobiles and trucks, holding heavy material; unloading supplies and equipment; removing and replacing truck bodies; filling paint pots and checking out tools, materials and supplies; sand, mask, blow-off and prepare equipment for painting, clean paint booths and various objects and paint as needed.
  • Perform tasks as providing tools and parts; positioning parts for installation; jacking vehicles; etc.
  • Use various tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, etc. in assisting Mechanics.
  • Install, remove and repair tire chains, change tires and batteries on automobiles and pickup trucks as directed, service battery room.
  • Transport vehicles; pick up and deliver parts and supplies.
  • Fill tanks of vehicles as directed; prepare mileage tickets.
  • Clean and wash vehicles, equipment and work areas; handle salvage materials.
  • Learn and practice safety regulations and work standards.
  • Operate Division vehicles/equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
