A little about us GVEA is an electric cooperative that maintains 3,292 miles of transmission and distribution lines, 40 substations, and 9 generating facilities. Our system is interconnected with Fort Wainwright, Eielson AFB, Fort Greely, the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, and all electric utilities in the Alaska Railbelt, which extends from Homer to Fairbanks. Your day-to-day as a Mechanic Helper As a Mechanic Helper at Golden Valley Electric Association, you will support Mechanics in maintaining and repairing a wide range of fleet and utility equipment. Your day-to-day work will include assisting with inspections, preventive maintenance, and basic repairs on equipment ranging from small engines to light and heavy-duty trucks and specialized utility vehicles. You will help diagnose issues, disassemble and reassemble components, and examine parts for wear or damage, while gaining hands-on experience using shop tools and equipment. In addition to mechanical support, you will play an important role in shop operations, including cleaning and maintaining the work area, washing and steam cleaning vehicles, and assisting with moving equipment and vehicles within the yard or to other locations. You may also assist with transporting vehicles, handling materials, and supporting priority maintenance needs to ensure the shop operates efficiently. This role provides a strong foundation in mechanical work within a safety-focused, team-oriented environment, offering valuable experience working alongside skilled Mechanics. To excel as a Mechanic Helper at Golden Valley Electric Association, candidates should have a high school diploma or equivalent and an interest in working with mechanical equipment in a hands-on environment. Experience assisting with the maintenance and repair of fleet vehicles or heavy equipment is preferred. Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to follow directions, work safely around shop equipment, and support mechanics with inspections, maintenance, and repairs. Mechanical aptitude, reliability, and a willingness to learn are essential for success in this role. Strong teamwork and communication skills, along with the ability to maintain a clean and organized work environment, are important. Candidates should also be comfortable working both independently and alongside others in a shop setting. A valid Alaska driver's license and a clean driving record are required. A Class A CDL and forklift certification are preferred. A proactive attitude and commitment to safety are critical to maintaining high operational standards. Knowledge and skills required for the position are: High School diploma or the equivalent. A valid Alaska driver's license is required.
