About The Position

The Meat Department Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the meat department, ensuring product quality, maintaining compliance with food safety regulations, and delivering excellent customer service. This role includes supervising meat department staff, managing inventory, and driving sales through effective merchandising and marketing strategies. The Meat Department Supervisor plays a key role in maintaining high operational standards, enhancing profitability, and supporting the store's overall goals.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Two (2) years experience in merchandising and/or management in a retail or related environment.
  • One (1) year of supervisory experience in a grocery store or related environment.
  • One (1) year of experience with the technical skills to assist as needed within the department.
  • Certification in food safety or sanitation (e.g., ServSafe, Food Handlers Card) or attained within 30 days of hire.
  • Certification in CPR and First Aid within 90 days of hire.
  • A satisfactory result obtained through a test for illegal drugs.
  • Acknowledge and agree to maintain a drug-free workplace.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise daily operations of the meat department, including product preparation, cutting, packaging, and display.
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, and sanitation regulations to maintain a safe and clean work environment.
  • Monitor department performance metrics and implement solutions to achieve goals related to sales, shrink, and labor.
  • Oversee and actively participate in meat cutting, trimming, grinding, wrapping, labeling, and packaging to ensure daily case readiness and quality standards are met.
  • Ensure First In First Out (FIFO) rotation practices are consistently followed and documented.
  • Monitor cooler, freezer, and display case temperatures, maintain required logs and immediately report equipment issues.
  • Manage and train meat department staff, including scheduling, coaching, and performance evaluations.
  • Facilitate training programs on food safety, product handling, and customer service for new and existing employees.
  • Promote a collaborative and motivated team environment.
  • Prepare weekly department schedules within labor targes and adjust staffing based on volume, sales trends, and operational needs.
  • Assign daily production tasks and priorities to ensure efficiency and accountability.
  • Oversee product quality, freshness, and proper rotation to meet company and regulatory standards.
  • Maintain visually appealing and organized displays that attract customers and drive sales.
  • Respond promptly to customer inquiries and feedback related to meat products.
  • Ensure accurate pricing, labeling, and signage on all meat products.
  • Manage inventory levels to prevent overstock or shortages while ensuring availability of key items.
  • Coordinate with suppliers to order meat products and supplies, adhering to budgetary constraints.
  • Conduct regular inventory counts and address discrepancies to minimize shrink and waste.
  • Monitor department expenses and support shrink reduction.
  • Track freshness and spoilage and take corrective action to minimize loss.
  • Implement merchandising strategies to enhance product visibility and promote seasonal or special items.
  • Analyze sales trends to identify opportunities for improved product placement and promotional tactics.
  • Collaborate with the marketing team to execute department-specific promotions and events.
  • Foster a culture of exceptional customer service, addressing customer needs promptly and professionally.
  • Engage with customers to provide product recommendations and cooking tips.
  • Ensure the department is customer-ready with well-stocked displays and accurate pricing.
  • Monitor the condition and functionality of department equipment including saws, grinders, slicers, wrappers, and refrigeration units.
  • Ensure staff are properly trained on equipment use and safety procedures.
  • Participate in store leadership meetings and contribute to overall operational strategies.
  • Support the Store Managers in achieving store goals and addressing operational challenges.
  • Oversees the supervision of personnel, which includes hiring, work allocation, training, problem resolution; evaluates performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions; motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance; provides guidance and feedback for assigned staff.
