Materials Testing Technician
About The Position
The Materials Testing Technician performs a variety of quality assurance tests on construction materials used in transportation projects. Working in both laboratory and field environments, the Technician assists with materials testing, inspections, and data collection to support roadway and bridge construction and maintenance. This position follows established procedures, standards, and specifications to help ensure the quality and performance of materials. The Technician may also participate in internal materials evaluations and investigations, including the use of new equipment, emerging technologies, and innovative materials and treatments. This role offers hands-on experience, opportunities for learning and development, and the ability to contribute to projects that positively impact the community.
Requirements
- Two years of experience working in a construction materials laboratory, including field and/or laboratory testing materials used in the construction and maintenance of streets, highways, bridges, and related structures
- High school diploma or GED
- A combination of post-secondary education and/or job-related experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications on a year-for-year basis
- Successful candidates must currently possess, or have the ability to obtain, a valid Arizona driver's license by the time of hire
- Must possess ATTI Field Certification or ACI Field Certification, or have the ability to obtain both certifications within six months from the hire date
- Nuclear Gauge short course certification, or the ability to obtain within six months of the hire date
Nice To Haves
- ACI certifications, including Field Testing Technician and/or Strength Testing Technician Grade 1
- ATTI certifications, including Asphalt, Soils, Field Certification Level 1, and/or Nuclear Gauge Certification
- NICET certification: Level I/II Construction Materials Testing/Highway Construction
Responsibilities
- Perform laboratory testing of construction materials used in assigned projects
- Perform field inspections and testing to ensure compliance with material specifications and construction methods
- Perform inspections of vendor/supplier facilities, equipment, and manufacturing processes
- Participate in proficiency sample testing and on-site certification inspections conducted by national certifying agencies
- Complete and report test results of assigned special research projects in accordance with instructions specified by the requester or the laboratory supervisor
- Prepare and submit inspection reports, test results, and summaries for review
- Perform maintenance, calibration, and verification of laboratory and field-testing equipment
- Participate in training and assist in training new Materials Testing Technicians
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned
