Mary Jaharis Center Co-Funding Grants promote Byzantine studies in North America. These grants provide co-funding to organize scholarly gatherings (e.g., workshops, seminars, small conferences) in North America that advance scholarship in Byzantine studies broadly conceived. We are particularly interested in supporting convenings that build diverse professional networks that cross the boundaries of traditional academic disciplines, propose creative approaches to fundamental topics in Byzantine studies, or explore new areas of research or methodologies. For the 2026–2027 grant cycle, the Mary Jaharis Center will commit approximately $5,000 to Co-Funding Grants. The value of individual awards will be based on the submitted budget and determined by the grant committee. Applicants are advised that the value of grants awarded is unlikely to exceed $2000 and may be less than the amount sought. Applications are accepted between 1 November 2025 and 1 February 2026. Notifications will be made in late May 2026. Terms Funds should normally be used between 1 July 2026 and 30 June 2027. Names of recipients and their activities will be published on the MJC website. Recipients will submit within 3 months of the conclusion of the event a final report with a reconciled budget and documentation of expenditures. The report (1000–1500 words) should describe the event, what research objectives were achieved, the size, composition, and diversity of participants and audience, how the outcomes of the gathering are being communicated to other scholars in the field, and any plans for further developing the objectives of the gathering. Recipients will submit within 3 months of the conclusion of the event a brief report (400–500 words) describing the gathering and its outcomes. The report should be accompanied by visual documentation of the event. The report and images will be posted on the MJC website. Recipients will acknowledge the Mary Jaharis Center for Byzantine Art and Culture in all publicity and communications (e.g., website, poster, listserv or blog announcement, program booklet). Recipients will acknowledge the Mary Jaharis Center for Byzantine Art and Culture in any publications resulting from the gathering, whether an article, a book, or any other form of output. Recipients should provide the Mary Jaharis Center with full bibliographical information on any publications. Recipients will be expected to host the gathering as described in their proposal. Any significant divergence from the original proposal should be reported to the Mary Jaharis Center. If the gathering does not proceed, the Mary Jaharis Center will ask for funds to be returned in full.
