About The Position

The Verge is seeking a Marketing & Growth Strategist to drive growth for its paid subscription and podcast portfolio. They will be accountable for accelerating subscriber acquisition, registered user growth, and long-term audience loyalty. And they will play a critical part in expanding the reach, engagement, and cultural impact of the Verge podcasts — translating listening into deeper relationships with our audience through thoughtful, high-impact marketing campaigns. We are seeking someone highly experimental, with a test-and-learn mindset and a strong sense of curiosity and creativity — comfortable launching quickly, iterating based on data, and continuously testing new approaches to drive measurable growth. This role sits at the center of audience growth and brand storytelling, working closely with editorial leadership, audio, audience development, product, and revenue. The ideal candidate is equal parts strategic marketer, persuasive communicator, and savvy connector — someone who understands how to plan and execute campaigns, amplify moments across channels, and turn audience attention into measurable growth.

Requirements

  • 3-5 years of experience in growth marketing, communications, audience development, or public relations — ideally within digital media, technology, or culture
  • Demonstrated experience driving subscription and/or registered user growth
  • Proven success pitching and securing amplification through influencers, newsletters, media, or creators
  • A strong network of media, newsletter, and creator contacts within the tech ecosystem
  • Deep understanding of the creator and influencer landscape, including platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and Substack
  • Exceptional writing skills — from conversion-focused marketing copy to polished pitch narratives
  • Data-literate and comfortable translating performance insights into strategy
  • Creative, strategic, highly organized, and comfortable operating in a fast-moving editorial environment
  • Deep familiarity with The Verge’s voice, audience, and coverage areas

Responsibilities

  • Lead end-to-end campaign development, from positioning and messaging through launch, optimization, and reporting
  • Write compelling, conversion-focused copy across newsletters, landing pages, paid media, social promotion, and on-site placements
  • Align marketing initiatives with editorial franchises, major features, product launches, and events
  • Manage marketing and testing budgets, including paid acquisition spend
  • Define and track KPIs related to subscriber growth, registered user acquisition, conversion rate, CAC/CPA, retention, and ROI
  • Analyze performance data and proactively identify optimization opportunities
  • Report on impact clearly and connect storytelling to measurable business outcomes
  • Develop and execute multi-channel campaigns to drive subscription acquisition and registered user growth
  • Partner with Product and Audience teams to optimize on-site conversion funnels (paywalls, landing pages, registration prompts, inline modules, etc.)
  • Identify high-intent audience cohorts and growth levers using audience and performance data
  • Partner with Newsletter strategist to support lifecycle marketing initiatives including onboarding, engagement, retention, and winback programs
  • Translate editorial tentpoles and major moments into subscription-driving campaigns
  • Own marketing strategy for The Verge’s podcast portfolio, with a focus on expanding reach, increasing listenership, and driving repeat engagement
  • Develop go-to-market plans for new shows, series launches, and key episodes — including positioning, rollout strategy, and cross-channel promotion
  • Lead distribution and amplification efforts across platforms (Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, social, and on-site), optimizing for discovery and sustained growth
  • Identify and activate growth levers such as cross-promotion, creator collaborations, newsletter integrations, and off-platform partnerships
  • Partner with Audio and Editorial teams to package episodes and franchises in ways that maximize cultural relevance and shareability
  • Lead communications strategy for major Verge projects and tentpole moments
  • Pitch Verge stories, talent, and franchises to newsletters, media, and platforms to drive reach and impact
  • Build and manage relationships with creators, influencers, and media partners across tech and culture
  • Identify and execute amplification opportunities through partnerships, collaborations, and digital activations
  • Position Verge talent as leading voices through media opportunities, guest bookings, and speaking engagements
  • Develop concise press materials, bios, and narratives that elevate brand and talent authority
