The DCR is steward to one of the largest and most diverse state parks systems in the nation which includes more than 450,000 acres of parks, forests, water supply protection lands, beaches, lakes, ponds, playgrounds, swimming pools, skating rinks, trails, golf courses and parkways. DCR strives to be an exemplary leader in conservation and recreation. The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) seeks a motivated and detail-oriented Marine Infrastructure O&M Planning Intern to assist in developing an electronic Operations and Maintenance (O&M) plan for DCR-managed marine assets across the Boston Harbor Islands. This initiative will improve long-term maintenance planning, asset tracking, and safety for one of Commonwealth's most unique coastal park systems. (Unpaid Internship). Dates 1-20-26 through 4-3-26. This internship is unpaid and designed to support students or recent graduates seeking practical experience in the field. Candidates may be eligible to earn academic credit through their college or university.

  • Maritime Academy student, marine/civil/structural/coastal/ocean engineering student, or similar.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills needed.

Responsibilities

  • Inventory and document existing marine infrastructure, including docks, piers, gangways, floats, moorings, and related facilities.
  • Compile and organize engineering drawings, inspection records, and maintenance logs.
  • Develop a digital O&M plan using GIS and/or asset management tools to track condition, maintenance schedules, and replacement cycles.
  • Coordinate with DCR engineering, waterways management, facilities, and operations staff to verify site data and prioritize maintenance needs.
  • Contribute to developing standardized templates and digital workflows for ongoing updates to the plan.
  • Participate in field visits to select Boston Harbor Islands (weather and vessel schedule permitting).
