The Manufacturing Engineer Principal will direct high level engineering analysis and design of new and modified components and subsystems in accordance with engineering standards and project scope to ensure that designs meet customer requirements, corporate objectives, are safe, and can be manufactured. This role may lead minimal direct reports. YOUR IMPACT: These duties are not meant to be all-inclusive and other duties may be assigned. Responsible for completion of a complex project on time. Will be responsible for overall project schedule and budget and manage multiple priorities. Collaborate as needed with other engineering business support disciplines internally as well as suppliers externally. May have exposure to the external customers and/or industry organizations. Perform and check complex engineering calculations, investigations, and tasks as assigned according to Oshkosh as well as general industry engineering standards and processes. Participate in the budgeting process to include recommending capital improvements and preparing justification data as required. Research, study, and propose use of new technologies to be used in the development of new and improved products. Maintain effective communication with suppliers, internal and external customers, and outside resources concerning technical issues. Enforce the proper use of engineering criteria and drawing standards. Ensure that technical issues are conducted within the framework of company policies and procedures. Directs preparation of layouts, drawings, specifications, and bills of material. Provide subject matter expertise leadership to a large technical staff to ensure program success. Assure designs meet customer requirements, statutory requirements, and corporate objectives. Provide leadership to the Business Unit (BU) engineering group as needed to support BU and Corporate business objectives. This includes the development of a strategic vision for the department as well as providing effective support for all aspects of the organization through the creation of cost effective, innovative products and processes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in operations, engineering, or related field.
  • Seven (7) or more years of relevant experience.
  • Internal Contacts: Contact with peers and others involving explanation of information (these contacts may be within or outside department or division), and the gathering of factual information; may include the communication of sensitive or confidential information.
  • External Contacts: External contact involving a requirement to maintain a continuing external working relationship with individuals, or organizations.
  • Communication Skills: Read, write and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos. Read and interpret safety rules, operating/maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Write routine reports, correspondence and speak effectively before both internal and external groups. Read, analyze and interpret business manuals, technical procedures and/or government regulations. Read, analyze and interpret scientific and technical journals, financial reports and legal documents. Prepare and/or present written communications that pertain to controversial and complex topics.
  • Decision-Making: Significant responsibility for decisions and final results, affecting more than one function or a function with multiple units. Substantial analysis is required and many factors must be weighed before a decision can be reached.
  • Complexity, Judgment and Problem Solving: Work requires the ability to plan and perform work in light of new or constantly changing problems, work from broad instruction, and deal with complex factors not easily evaluated. Decisions require considerable judgment, initiative and ingenuity in areas there is little precedent.
  • Supervisory/Managerial: General instructing, scheduling, and reviewing the work of others performing the same or directly related work. Acts as “lead worker”. Job functional supervision only.
