MANUAL MACHINIST TOOL & DIE MAKER
About The Position
The Manual Machinist Tool & Die Maker is responsible for the precision machining, fitting, and assembly of stamping dies from inception to completion, working under the guidance of the tool & die lead and manager. This role requires extensive experience with conventional metalworking machinery, including manual mills, lathes, and surface grinders, to perform operations such as turning, facing, boring, tapping, milling, sawing, and drilling. The position involves creating and building jigs, fixtures, and tools, as well as performing die repairs, scheduled preventative maintenance, and troubleshooting. A strong understanding of blueprints, tolerances, and various material properties is essential, along with advanced troubleshooting skills and an excellent level of detail. The role operates within a machine shop setting and requires adherence to company safety policies, with a willingness to work outside of standard hours as needed.
Requirements
- Minimum 5 years in a machine shop setting with heavy emphasis on conventional metal working machinery.
- Basic understanding of stamping dies, presses and feed systems. Heavy experience in any of these areas is a major plus.
- Must be able to setup manual mills, lathes, surface grinders etc. and operate them efficiently.
- Machine operations include but not limited to turning, facing, boring, tapping, milling, sawing, drilling etc.
- Be able to layout, fit and modify parts to achieve required scope of work.
- Be able to read blueprints and understand tolerances. Will be asked to manufacture jigs/fixtures and or parts without a supplied print.
- Knowledge of common material properties such as cold roll steel, carbon steel, tool steels, aluminum, brass etc. and now to properly machine.
- Advanced troubleshooting skills
- Excellent level to detail
Nice To Haves
- Extensive experience in die building and troubleshooting.
- Experience in EDM, CNC machining is a plus however this position will only have access to conventional metal working machinery.
- Experience in heat treating/tempering materials.
- Sheet metal material properties and their behaviors during stamping/bending operations. Includes galvanized mild steel, aluminum, powder coated mild steel etc.
- Experience in pneumatics and hydraulics.
- Any outside certifications or training in the tool and die field.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for machining parts, fitting and assembling stamping dies from start to finish at the direction of the tool & die lead and manager.
- Sharpening punches, dies and other tooling used in stamping dies.
- Create and build jigs, fixtures and tools as directed.
- Performing die repairs and scheduled PMs as needed.
- Performing die troubleshooting as needed.
- Setup and perform manual machining operations on new and existing parts.
- Keep work area and machines clean.
- Be willing to work outside of standard working hours as needed.
- Comply with company safety policies.
