This position, Manager Systems Engineering (M2), is responsible for the ongoing design and development efforts within Beckman Coulter’s Automation Liquid Handling platform. A successful individual in this role will utilize technical knowledge, experience, and engineering tools and methodologies to bridge the gap across functional teams and connect critical elements, including Software, Firmware, Hardware, Consumables, and Applications. This role will be integrated into ongoing projects to act as the hub of product development by driving system architecture, specification and design, interfaces, subsystem trade-offs, traceability of design control requirements, verification testing, and supporting technology transfer to manufacturing. You will be a critical player on a fast-paced team that is developing our next generation of automation liquid handling solutions. This position reports to the Head of Automation Hardware and is part of Automation team located in Indianapolis, IN and will be an on-site role.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree or advanced degree in an engineering discipline (Systems, Software, EE, Computer Science)
  • 9+ years (B.S.) or 7+ years (M.S.) of industry experience in architecture, development, and verification of scientific automation instrumentation, robotics, or complex electromechanical equipment.
  • 3+ years of technical management experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication skills, and ability to collaborate effectively.
  • Experienced with data acquisition, task automation (macros, scripting, batch files), and analysis with good understanding of statistical concepts
  • Architecture design and management for system, sub-system, and interfaces
  • Experience managing a technical engineering team through requirements management (derive, write, trace, maintain), risk analysis (safety risk analysis, design risk analysis, failure mode effects analysis) and full verification/validation cycle
  • Ability to lift, move or carry equipment up to 20lb
  • Ability to travel up to 10% domestic and internationally.

  • Customer insight gathering and have a strong desire to interact with customers implement customer insights for projects
  • Model based system engineering
  • Experience with a compiled programming language such as C++, or C#

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a systems team within new product development.
  • Gather insights from customers and own the system architecture for projects in new product development
  • Work with project teams and lead the definition of user needs, design requirements, design traceability, and risk analysis
  • Deliver tried analytical/experimental problem-solving skills to understand hardware, software, application issues and quickly analyze and resolve system interoperability problems
  • Scope, design, develop, verify, and validate new products, features, and solutions in biotech lab automation
  • Design and manage Architecture for system, sub-system, and interfaces.
