About The Position

The Manager of Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) is responsible for compliance with government (local and federal) environmental, health and safety regulations; implementation of industry standard best practices across multiple sites; and works collaboratively with senior leaders and local management to continuously improve SHE programs. The position works with peers across North America (NA) to align region-wide programs along with consideration of global programs to co-create NA wide initiatives. This position is located in Battle Creek, MI and reports directly to the Senior Manager of NA SHE.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Safety, Health, Environment or Compliance or a combination of related certifications, education and experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Ten to fifteen years of operations, manufacturing and/or industrial business experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of regulatory compliance and occupational safety experience; a strong track record of improving safety performance.
  • Previous experience in a manufacturing environment leading safety and compliance.
  • Minimum of five years of management and leadership experience with a similar size team.
  • Proven history of professional and discrete handling of emergency situations, as well as difficult, sensitive and high-profile situations.
  • Strong track record of building partnerships with manufacturing and warehouse leaders implementing progressive safety and environmental initiatives.
  • Proficient in organizational skills with a high level of attention to detail and accuracy.

Nice To Haves

  • CSP (Certified Safety Professional) or CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist) certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Working with site management sharing best practices across the organization.
  • Advise and support site management/operational staff on all SHE activities, communicating initiatives, and establishing/updating and disseminating documentation relating to the SHE management systems.
  • Champion initiatives focusing on preventive actions that identify and communicate facility risk exposure, prioritizing risk reduction needs and ensuring closure of recommendations to reduce risk.
  • Working with operational staff, identify areas of improvement, lead development of local improvement initiatives, and establish SHE action plans to achieve set objectives and targets.
  • Build upon existing SHE processes and KPIs to manage and measure both the process and the results.
  • Develops and implements strategic goals supporting corporate and local SHE objectives.
  • Leads investigation of safety related accidents or incidents to identify root cause(s) and implementation of effective corrective/preventive actions.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance to local, state and federal SHE regulations.
  • Maintain all environmental, safety and health permits, documents and records per requirements.
  • Plans and ensures delivery of training programs for regulatory mandated requirements as well as site specific SHE training.
  • Audit the effectiveness, quality, and presenter delivery of all required safety training.
  • Ensure routine audits are conducted of facilities and processes to assess and identify safety, health, and environmental risks.
  • Compile and publish monthly, quarterly and annual reports on site health and safety performance, SHE issues, regulatory compliance and personnel training.
  • Ensure that Safety Data Sheets are maintained and readily accessible at all locations.
  • Analyze statistical and cause-analysis data to assist in the development of hazard identification and prevention activities in the plants.
  • Effectively manage, develop, and motivate direct and indirect reports. Responsible for all aspects of performance management including interviewing, hiring, training, performance evaluations, and recognition.
  • Thorough knowledge of regulatory and industry standards (e.g. ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 50001, GHS, REACH, etc.); CPR/First Aid/AED Certified; OSHA 30-Hour training Special Job.
