Railroad Grade Crossing Engineering – Manager of Special Projects Benesch is seeking a Manager of Special Projects to join our nationally recognized Railroad Grade Crossing team within the Railroad Division. This is an upper-level leadership role for a proven project management professional ready to direct complex public projects with minimal oversight while mentoring the next generation of project managers. If you are energized by leading high-impact infrastructure programs, driving accountability, and serving as the trusted advisor to clients and internal teams, this role is built for you. Location This role can be based in one of our Railroad Division offices. Remote flexibility may be considered for the right candidate. Travel will be required to support project and client needs.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated competency at the Public Project Manager II level or equivalent
  • Proven experience directing complex public infrastructure or railroad-related projects
  • Strong leadership skills with experience supervising and mentoring professional staff
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office and Primavera
  • Advanced knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and industry practices
  • Ability to manage accounting reports, budgets, and financial performance
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to manage client expectations and navigate difficult conversations
  • High school diploma required; AAS or BS degree preferred
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license with a safe motor vehicle record

Responsibilities

  • Lead and direct assigned railroad grade crossing programs and public infrastructure projects with full ownership of scope, schedule, and budget
  • Provide direct supervision and leadership to Public Project Managers and technical staff
  • Oversee development and revisions of project work plans to ensure alignment with client expectations and company strategy
  • Develop, monitor, and manage project budgets, schedules, and accounting reports
  • Serve as the chief liaison between clients, subconsultants, and internal teams
  • Lead contract negotiations and participate in resolving conflicts during project development and construction
  • Review and coordinate design details, specifications, and construction documentation
  • Ensure survey activities, documentation management, and quality control plans are properly executed
  • Review and verify invoices and expense reports for accuracy and contract compliance
  • Follow up with clients regarding invoice collection and maintain financial accountability
  • Establish and maintain the project Quality Management Plan
  • Ensure vehicles, equipment, and resources are properly allocated and maintained
  • Comply with all company and project safety standards
