The Manager of Safety has responsibility for managing the programs that result in the airline’s safe operations for both its team members and customers. The Manager of Safety is a safety leadership position responsible for managing and overseeing the Company’s Safety Management System (SMS) and Safety Assurance functions in accordance with FAA 14 CFR Part 5. This role serves as the Company’s subject matter expert across all four pillars of SMS—Safety Policy, Safety Risk Management, Safety Assurance, and Safety Promotion, and requires demonstrated hands-on experience in aviation safety program management. The Manager of Safety works closely with the Director of Safety to drive SMS maturity, ensure regulatory compliance, and continuously improve organizational safety performance.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years of progressive, professional experience in aviation safety, Safety Management Systems, Safety Assurance, or operational risk management.
  • Demonstrated experience managing or directly supporting an FAA-compliant SMS within a commercial aviation environment.
  • Proven experience conducting internal audits, evaluations, and safety investigations in accordance with FAA and industry standards.
  • Strong working knowledge of FAA regulations, SMS frameworks, and Internal Evaluation Programs (IEP).
  • Ability to independently analyze complex safety data, identify systemic risk, and develop actionable safety recommendations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience briefing senior leadership and regulators.
  • Ability to multitask and work under pressure in a dynamic environment.
  • Must always exercise good judgement.
  • Travel will be required.
  • Being willing to accept duties after traditional business hours.
  • Pass a two (2) year drug and alcohol background check, pre-employment drug test, and criminal history records check (CHRC).
  • Eligible to work in the United States.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in an airline or commercial aviation environment (Part 121 or Part 135).
  • Direct experience with FAA oversight, regulatory audits, IATA standards, IOSA, or equivalent industry audit programs.
  • Experience using enterprise-level safety data management and corrective action tracking systems.
  • Professional safety or aviation certifications such as ASQ, ISASI, ASP, CSP, or equivalent.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Aviation, Safety Management, Engineering, or related discipline.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage Safety Management System (SMS) and Safety Assurance activities in compliance with FAA Part 5 and Company safety programs.
  • Act as the primary subject matter expert for SMS implementation, Safety Assurance, and internal evaluation processes.
  • Develop, maintain, and continuously improve SMS policies, procedures, training, and implementation strategies across the organization.
  • Plan, schedule, conduct, and oversee internal audits, inspections, and evaluations as part of the Company’s Internal Evaluation Program (IEP) in coordination with the IEP manager.
  • Lead or conduct investigations into flight and ground operational accidents, incidents, and hazards using recognized investigative and risk management methodologies.
  • Analyze safety data, audit findings, and hazard reports to identify trends, assess risk, and develop effective mitigation strategies.
  • Identify, document, and track safety assurance nonconformities and ensure timely implementation and verification of corrective actions.
  • Ensure accurate documentation and traceability of safety data, audit results, and corrective actions within the Company’s Safety Data Collection and Risk Management systems.
  • Conduct audit in-briefs and out-briefs with executive leadership and operational management.
  • Communicate safety risks, audit outcomes, and corrective actions clearly and effectively across all levels of the organization.
  • Recommend and support changes to safety policies, procedures, and operational processes based on safety data and assurance findings.
  • Collaborate with operational departments, Quality, and external stakeholders to resolve complex, cross-functional safety issues.
  • Represent the Company in safety committees, regulatory interactions, industry forums, and professional development activities.
  • In the absence of the Director of Safety, may be called upon to perform duties (delegate) of the Director of Safety including, liaise with the local FAA Flight Safety District Office, OSHA, NTSB, or other regulatory agencies as directed by President and CEO pertaining to areas of function and responsibility.
  • Perform safety leadership duties in full compliance with 14 CFR Part 5, including §5.23(a), and applicable FAA, IATA, IOSA, DOD, and Company safety requirements.
