About The Position

The Butler University Human Resources department operates through a collaborative model of specialized teams, including Benefits, Compensation, Learning and Development, Talent Acquisition, Data Analytics, and Operations and Compliance. Each team provides focused expertise within its functional area, ensuring that leaders and employees receive dedicated support aligned to best practices and regulatory requirements. This position is part of the Operations and Compliance team and serves as a key subject matter expert in employee relations, policy interpretation, and organizational practices. The role is responsible for advising leaders on complex people matters, ensuring compliance with institutional policies and employment regulations, and strengthening operational effectiveness across assigned departments. Responsibilities for benefits administration, compensation, recruitment, and training are supported by dedicated HR teams, allowing this role to focus on employee relations strategy, investigations, compliance oversight, and organizational risk management. The Manager, HR Operations & Compliance partners closely with Vice Presidents and senior leaders to address workplace concerns, guide performance and conduct-related decisions, and support organizational structure and workforce planning. This role applies deep knowledge of HR policies, employment practices, and organizational dynamics to analyze situations, recommend solutions, and ensure consistent, compliant, and effective management of people-related issues. Success in this role requires strategic judgment, strong investigative and problem-solving skills, and the ability to influence leaders in navigating complex employee and organizational challenges. This role is designed to build deep institutional knowledge and leadership capability within Operations and Compliance and offers the opportunity to grow into broader leadership responsibility as organizational needs evolve.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field
  • Minimum of 10 years of HR experience with significant responsibility in employee relations, compliance, and HR operations, including advising leaders on complex workplace and organizational matters.
  • Experience managing HR processes, programs, or projects in a complex organizational environment
  • Strong knowledge of employment law, HR best practices, and employee relations principles
  • Working knowledge of change management principles and practices
  • Ability to analyze HR data and trends to support recommendations and process improvement
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and deliver accurate, timely results
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a focus on practical, service-oriented solutions
  • Ability to build and maintain effective collaborative relationships across a multi-functional HR environment
  • High level of emotional intelligence, discretion, and ability to manage confidential information appropriately
  • Ability to work independently while coordinating across HR functional teams to ensure consistent processes

Responsibilities

  • Provide HR partnership and project support to assigned departments representing approximately 400 employees, ensuring consistent application of HR processes, policies, and services.
  • Provide guidance to leaders and employees on interpretation of policies, procedures, and standard HR practices, ensuring consistent and compliant application across the university.
  • Advise on employee relations matters, conduct thorough and impartial investigations, and support resolution of workplace issues to improve working relationships, engagement, and retention.
  • Manage the university’s immigration sponsorship processes (H-1B, J-1, and Permanent Residency) and serve as a subject matter expert to leaders on international hiring requirements and compliance.
  • Partner with the Title IX Office and other stakeholders on employee-related matters as needed to ensure appropriate coordination and compliance.
  • Analyze HR data, trends, and metrics in partnership with HR colleagues to identify issues and support development of recommendations, process improvements, and policy enhancements.
  • Support and implement human capital initiatives related to workforce planning, talent assessment, succession planning, and employee engagement in collaboration with HR leadership and functional partners.
  • Lead and/or support the planning, coordination, and execution of HR initiatives and projects in partnership with HR leadership and cross-functional HR teams.
  • Serve as a key partner to HR leadership in advancing operational priorities and continuous improvement initiatives within HR processes and service delivery.
  • Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to enhance efficiency, consistency, and effectiveness of HR operations and services.
  • Provide consultation and share subject matter expertise with HR colleagues to support consistent practices and alignment across HR functional areas.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations through consistent application of HR policies and procedures.
