About The Position

Under the direction of the Director, Tribal Brand & Community Advancement, the Manager, Community Advancement, is responsible for operational oversight of the Tribe’s charitable giving program, which includes the full grant application cycle and development of high-impact grant opportunities and partnerships. Oversees the implementation of the giving strategy, manages budgets and forecasting, and leads high-profile grant relationships. Leads the department team of program officers and an operations specialist and ensures alignment with Tribal goals and program requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration or applicable degree is required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in government/nonprofit sector and/or philanthropic programs required.
  • Minimum three (3) years of direct supervisory experience required.
  • Experience managing people leaders preferred.
  • Experience working with government funded programs and grantmaking required.
  • Experience working in/with Tribal Governments preferred.
  • Related, relevant, and/or direct experience may be considered in lieu of minimum educational requirements indicated above.
  • Skills in service provision and relationship management.
  • Able to communicate well in all aspects of communication which include written, oral, listening, presenting and expressing ideas.
  • Ability to multi-task with strong organizational skills and ability to work well under deadlines required.
  • Advanced level experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) required.
  • Experience with Blackbaud Grant Management System highly desired.
  • Must be highly organized, detail-oriented and able to handle multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Understand the entire grant process, from research and application to compliance and reporting.
  • This includes familiarity with grant funding sources (e.g., federal, state, private foundations) and adherence to related legal and ethical standards.
  • Proficient in using grant management software, databases, and spreadsheets to track applications, payments, and reports.
  • Ability to manage numerous grant projects simultaneously, set priorities, and adhere to deadlines.
  • Ability to develop operational plans to support the Tribe’s grantmaking efforts.
  • Identify and mitigate potential risks associated with grant partnerships and requests.
  • Maintain meticulous records, manage a high volume of documentation, and handle multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Guide and motivate the team to achieve grantmaking goals, communicate change, and lead the team through change and or new initiatives.
  • The capacity to create systems that promote learning, drive innovation, share knowledge productively, and use data to improve practices and strategies to improve the Tribe’s charitable giving program
  • Ability to cultivate strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to build trust and create a collaborative environment across the Tribal government and enterprises
  • At the discretion of the San Manuel Tribal Gaming Commission, you may be required to obtain and maintain a gaming license.
  • Authorized Driver: Role requires operation or driving of Tribe-owned vehicles or driving patron vehicles.
  • A valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record as determined by the insurance carrier is required.

Responsibilities

  • Manages the philanthropy team, overseeing daily operations, workflow, and responsibilities to support the Tribe’s charitable giving program.
  • Develops and refine grantmaking strategy in collaboration with leadership and oversee implementation of all activities from application through reporting to ensure alignment with Tribal philanthropic goals.
  • Manages large, high-profile grants, guiding the team in execution and ensuring alignment with program requirements and funding guidelines.
  • Manages closely with the Department leaders, Program Officers, and team members to streamline operations and support efficient delivery of philanthropic initiatives.
  • Manages philanthropy department budgets and forecasts, overseeing team contributions to financial reporting and compliance.
  • Manages responses to grant inquiries and partnership proposals, ensuring the team delivers timely, accurate information to leadership, Tribal stakeholders, and community partners in support of the charitable giving strategy.
  • Works with legal counsel and the team to uphold compliance and consistency across all grant-making functions.
  • Engages consultants, research partners, and internal departments, directing team collaboration on initiatives that strengthen program operations and expand community impact.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to support the efficient operation of the department.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning reviewing and directing work; evaluating and appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Make hiring decisions and designs individual development plans with succession planning in mind for all key roles.
