About The Position

This is a 1.5 year grant-funded benefited position that may be extended with future funding opportunities. Under the direction of University Neighborhood Partners staff and working closely with the Salt Lake City Sustainability Department, the Environmental Justice Partnership Manager will serve as the main point of contact at University Neighborhood Partners ( UNP ) for Salt Lake City’s Climate Pollution Reduction Grant ( CPRG ) activities, which are funded through the Environmental Protection Agency ( EPA ). The Environmental Justice Partnership Manager will be the lead staff member responsible for overseeing and facilitating the activities of a new Environmental Justice Resident Committee, focused on the Westside of Salt Lake City and West Valley City. Salt Lake City is working with community partners, environmental stakeholders, and other local governments in Salt Lake County and Tooele County to complete the deliverables of the Climate Pollution Reduction planning grant. This includes a subaward to University Neighborhood Partners to support fair, equitable, and meaningful engagement in Salt Lake City/West Valley City census tracts that are currently considered “low-income and/or disadvantaged” ( LIDAC ) according to the Climate & Economic Justice Screening Tool. The primary strategy for this engagement is through the creation and facilitation of the UNP Environmental Justice Resident Committee. The Resident Committee will meet two to three times a month to engage in deep learning about the local impacts of climate change and to serve as resident-experts in discussing, vetting, and co-creating solutions to include in the Priority Climate Action Plan and Comprehensive Climate Action Plan. The committee, as supported by the Environmental Justice Partnership Manager will also engage with other community and university opportunities around environmental justice. The position will be located at University Neighborhood Partners’ Hartland Partnership Center (1578 south 1700 south) or the University Neighborhood Partners House (1060 south 900 west), both are located along the vibrant Jordan River corridor. This position will be supervised by a director from University Neighborhood Partners.

Requirements

  • Robust knowledge of current trends in sustainability and environmental justice, particularly around climate change, air quality, and energy.
  • Experience facilitating multi-cultural groups comprised of English-language learners.
  • Knowledge and skills in problem solving, conflict resolution, negotiation, facilitation, mediation, and public speaking.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and build consensus with individuals of varied backgrounds.
  • Cultural humility and the ability to listen to and appreciate diverse perspectives.
  • Ability to assist with program reporting and writing.
  • Ability to use a personal computer and related programs including word processing and presentation software.
  • Ability to travel around Salt Lake City, West Valley City and to various external locations.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).
  • Four years of progressively more responsible management experience.
  • Background knowledge of hiring department’s area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of department.
  • Completion of provided supervisory training within one year of employment may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Leads and plans activities of the newly created Environmental Justice Resident Committee, in close coordination with UNP staff, and Salt Lake City Sustainability Department. This includes continued recruitment and training of new members, planning of monthly meetings, facilitation of meetings, coordination with guest experts, and regular communication with resident committee members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, and follow-up on any suggested work outside of meetings.
  • Implements best practices in community-engaged learning, resident-led community-building and cross sector equitable partnership development.
  • Serves as liaison with Salt Lake City as the primary UNP contact for CPRG grant-related activities, including attending and representing UNP in other City and State-level CPRG work groups.
  • Coordinates closely with Salt Lake City’s workforce fellow to support engagement on climate workforce analyses through UNP Resident Committee, community connections, and existing UNP programs.
  • Tracks activities of Resident Committee and compiles regular reports for CPRG grant reporting for Salt Lake City and EPA . Assists Salt Lake City Corportation’s Development Team with other grant reporting, as necessary.
  • Supports Resident Committee in developing their own environmental projects and supports them in building partnerships that move these ideas forward, including relationships with grant writing and development opportunities. In partnership with Salt Lake City and other government partners, develops fluency in federal grant opportunities that connect with resident and community concerns or ideas, and which support environmental initiatives of importance to Westside community.
  • Facilitates and plans monthly Environmental Institution meetings, which is a regular convening of environmental organizations and university researchers who are interested in community engagement and environmental justice. Supports opportunities for Westside engagement in community and university environmental initiatives.
  • Works collaboratively with a variety of organizations, institutions, and agencies to serve as a resource for environmental justice engagement. Manages environmental justice partnerships for UNP and makes recommendations to support the continued development of environmental justice partnership work through UNP and in the community.
  • Assists with researching or preparing potential grant applications for continued environmental justice work with Salt Lake City and University Neighborhood Partners.
  • Responds to participant and community concerns and resolves problems.
  • Attends UNP events, staff meetings, team meetings and takes part in UNP administrative processes.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
