About The Position

The Management Intern will assist in a variety of projects and events for the benefit of the organization. Under the supervision of the Assistant City Manager, this position serves as a training ground for students interested in becoming involved in local government. The student selected for this internship will be provided experience in writing, research, policy development, administrative operations, and municipal functions. This internship provides a unique opportunity for a student to work with community members, city staff, and professional organizations. Additionally, this internship is a customizable experience and an individual can tailor their internship based on their interests and the organization’s goals. The hiring range for this position begins at $16 per hour for current college students, and $17.50 per hour for graduates of a bachelor's program.

Requirements

  • Enrollment in a graduate or undergraduate degree program with an interest and aptitude to work public administration.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Excel and PowerPoint
  • Strong foundation in writing reports, articles and summaries.
  • Deadline driven
  • Able to manage multiple projects and work under pressure either independently or with a team
  • Strong planning, organization and time management skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to edit their own work and the work of others
  • Strong research and analytical skills
  • Strong public relations skills
  • Or any combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the responsibilities identified in this job description.

Responsibilities

  • Policy Research & Development . Conduct comparative research and summarize municipal policies and procedures. Draft memos for senior management, based upon research projects, including recommendations.
  • City Programs and Special Projects . Assist staff in the coordination and deployment of City programs and special projects. Complete special projects and assignments as needed to support the City Manager's Office and the Governing Body. Assist City staff with Moonlight Market event planning and participate in event day-of coordination and engagement. Works alongside other City interns to conduct research, complete a project, and give presentations to City Staff when appropriate
  • Learning & Development . Expand knowledge base by participating in webinars, observing meetings, attending professional gatherings with city management, observing the City’s Governing Body, and meeting with community members, organizations, and City staff. Shawnee strives to give interns opportunities to gain valuable knowledge and exposure that is beneficial to the organization and to the career development of its interns.
  • Other Duties . Support other departments and perform other duties, as deemed necessary or assigned.
