The Maintenance Worker-Welder is responsible for interpreting basic drawings, sketches, or verbal instructions to determine project requirements. This role involves fabricating frames, supports, and related equipment components using light structural steel and steel plate. The individual will select appropriate materials, lay out work, and cut metal using oxy-acetylene or electric arc methods. A key aspect of the position is accurately positioning materials for welding and performing welds in all positions, across all types of metals, and with various rod sizes, ensuring strength, precision, and adherence to safety standards. The role may also involve constructing smaller or more complex components using traditional blacksmithing methods and applying heat treatment techniques to temper and shape small tools and parts. Tasks are varied and non-repetitive, primarily performed within a designated area, but occasionally requiring work at the equipment’s final location. Strict safety practices, including the use of heavy protective gloves and a welder’s mask, are mandatory. The worker is responsible for the proper care, safe operation, and routine maintenance of welding equipment, including a 440-volt welding transformer, welding rods, portable oxy-acetylene equipment, clamps, and related tools. Additionally, the role may involve assisting as a millwright helper or general maintenance helper and requires maintaining a clean and organized work area.
