About The Position

The person employed in this capacity will perform his/her duties under the direction of the Superintendent of the Traffic Sign Division or the Public Works Director. This person will be responsible for the maintenance of street signs, signaling, parking lot striping, and pavement markings.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid driver's license.
  • CDL may be required at a future date.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Skill in operation of some of the listed tools and equipment.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Must have the ability to exercise safety precautions and conform to safety rules.
  • Must have the ability to communicate orally with co-workers using a two-way radio or face-to-face.
  • Must have working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to light equipment operations.
  • Must have working knowledge of equipment operating principles.
  • Must have working knowledge of the methods, materials and tools used in street maintenance and construction work.
  • Must have working knowledge of current traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in equipment operation.
  • Must have the ability to work cooperatively with other city employees and with the public.
  • Must be a team player.

Responsibilities

  • Make and install street signs.
  • Install and maintain pavement markings.
  • Install and maintain traffic signposts.
  • Perform initial work zone traffic control set up and make as needed adjustments as traffic conditions change.
  • Work in high traffic areas for traffic control.
  • Responsible for laying out parking lots and streets for striping and painting.
  • Responsible for building and maintaining barricades as needed for traffic control.
  • Use a variety of hand tools including pneumatic and hydraulic hand tools, chain saws, and weed eaters.
  • Inspect and check vehicle before use in order to ensure safe operating conditions, and maintain equipment in proper operating condition by performing simple preventive maintenance tasks.
  • Operate power driven machinery such as jackhammers, tamper or similar equipment.
  • Must be able to load and unload materials and equipment onto and from vehicles.
  • May perform clerical functions such as answering phones, filing and performing routine messenger services.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
