About The Position

Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance work in the construction, operation, repair, and maintenance of City owned facilities, grounds, infrastructure, and equipment with a positive team orientated attitude toward success.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED Equivalent.
  • One to two years of experience in the repair & maintenance of facilities or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted provided the candidate has demonstrated the ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities.
  • This position requires employees to respond to emergency and non-emergency situations outside normal business hours.
  • Since Public Works operates 24/7, this position could be required to work various shifts to provide coverage 7 days a week.
  • This position requires the ability to work shifts outside normal working hours as needed.
  • Some knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities.
  • The skill to operate the listed tools and equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time; ability to work safely; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, and to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in building system maintenance, construction and repair including carpentry, plumbing, HVAC systems and electrical maintenance of facilities.
  • Some knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, method and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities, some knowledge of municipal sewer and water systems.
  • Knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods, and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities.
  • Basic knowledge of water meters and plumbing systems.
  • State of Illinois Class "A" (CDL) Driver's License with Airbrake, Fifth Wheel and Tanker endorsement is required within 120 days of employment.
  • The CDL License with the endorsement must be maintained by the position holder at all times.

Responsibilities

  • Performs required labor including breaking pavement and curbing, excavating necessary material, and pouring asphalt and concrete in the construction, repair and maintenance of City streets, alleys, parkways, and lots; the inspection and maintenance of streetlights; installation of pavement markings and signs; removal and clean-up of graffiti and related damage to City property; litter pickup, landscape and tree maintenance; and the removal of debris from roadways and City property.
  • Performs general carpentry and other construction-related activities in the repair and maintenance of City facilities.
  • Repairs building systems including mechanical, electrical, fire/life safety, and custodial as needed.
  • Performs required labor as part of a Public Works crews including the inspection, maintenance, and installation of water distribution system appurtenances including maintenance of water piping, structures, manholes, valve vaults and buffalo boxes.
  • Performs the installation, inspection and maintenance of fire hydrants, valves, and related equipment.
  • Responds to residential complaints and other requests for service in response to excessive water usage, discoloration, or low pressure.
  • Performs utility locations of all City utilities as part of Joint Utility Locating Information for Excavators.
  • Performs required labor including the installation, inspection, and maintenance of sanitary and storm structures, manholes, lift stations, vaults, catch basins, and sewer lines.
  • As assigned, provides snow removal on City roadways, allies and sidewalks as part of the Citys regular snow operations.
  • Responds to residential complaints and other requests for service.
  • Responds to emergency events such as water main breaks, flooding, and snow removal.
  • Operates a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Performs routine inspection, cleaning, and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor.
  • Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
  • Assists with the oversight of contractors for various projects and repairs.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Clears debris and other blockages from creeks and streams; digs culverts.
