About The Position

This position is a Lasell College Buildings and Grounds position. As such, the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the Service Employees’ International Union, Local 615, and Lasell College applies. JOB SUMMARY: The Maintenance Mechanic II is responsible for performing various maintenance tasks, routine and semi-skilled. The basic purpose of this work is to perform various manual tasks required for upkeep of all College owned and/or leased campus buildings and homes. The statements below are intended to describe the principal duties of the person or persons assigned to this job. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties and responsibilities. Lasell College has the right to add or change the job responsibilities at any time. This employee must be able to perform all the tasks listed below and supervise employees of a lower level.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) is preferred. This position requires some high school and the ability to read, write, and follow work orders.
  • Ability to use all equipment and tools related to the maintenance trades; communicate effectively (oral); follow detailed oral/written instructions; and exercise basic human relations skills.
  • Satisfactory CORI (Criminal Offender Record Information)
  • Equivalent to High School education with vocational trade education and previous experience.
  • General knowledge of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, machine tools, and maintenance equipment related to these areas.
  • General knowledge of OSHA regulations.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to satisfactorily speak, read, and write in English.
  • Ability to understand and apply the laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, specifications, standards and guidelines governing the department.
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships and deal tactfully with others.
  • Ability to learn and perform all essential job functions accurately and safely with minimal direct supervision, within (90) days from date employee begins work.
  • General knowledge of the Colleges’ mission, purpose and goals and the role of their position in achieving those goals.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license good driving record, and satisfactory CORI.
  • May be required to lift/push/pull up to 75lbs.; subject to mechanical/chemical hazards and inclement weather/temperature extremes; work above ground level and in cramped positions; wear protective clothing; and work irregular hours. Pre-employment physical exam is required.
  • Average visual effort with infrequent exposure to visually demanding work.
  • Ability to stand, walk and/or sit and continuously perform essential job functions.
  • Ability to grasp, lift and/or carry or otherwise move heavy objects weighing greater than 75 lbs.
  • Ability to climb and work on ladders, scaffolds, and roofs.
  • Ability to walk up and down stairs.
  • Perform tasks requiring bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling and walking significant distances between and within college buildings.
  • Ability to perform duties in confined spaces, including equipment and attic spaces.
  • Ability to perform duties in extreme temperature ranges and weather conditions.
  • Sufficient manual dexterity in both hands to operate hand tools and power tools.
  • Visual ability corrected, to observe and detect signs of dangerous obstacles and to verify written information either at a distance and/or at close range.
  • Audio ability corrected, to hear emergency alerts and other audible alarms.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general building maintenance, including repairs and preventive maintenance as outlined on service requisitions using hand and power tools appropriate to the job on all college owned or leased buildings and homes.
  • Assist and cooperate with all trades people and College staff, faculty and students in the performance of day-to-day duties and responsibilities.
  • Assist with remodeling activities for large and small-scale projects.
  • Perform repairs to windows, walls, doors and all related hardware.
  • Repair faucets and other bathroom fixtures, and unclog toilets.
  • Reset electrical circuit breakers and report problems to appropriate personnel.
  • Replace burnt out light bulbs.
  • Assemble and make minor repairs of office furniture. Make minor installations of bookshelves, cabinets, pictures, clocks and the like.
  • Repair department equipment.
  • Assist with maintenance of mechanical systems as needed, including changing and inventorying filters.
  • Assist with the recycling and trash disposal program.
  • Assist in completing setup and maintenance related assignments for special events, meetings and College functions.
  • Assist with moving equipment and furniture as needed.
  • Perform grounds work and custodial work as needed.
  • Remove snow and ice as needed.
  • Wear appropriate safety equipment while performing all duties requiring such equipment.
  • Know proper use of and where to locate all safety related equipment.
  • Report hazardous and unusual situations to the appropriate authority.
  • Check individual mailbox at least 3 times per day for work orders, requisitions and other important College related information.
  • Complete all work orders and requisitions in a timely manner, and properly process and return all completed work orders and requisitions.
  • Carry a provided cell phone or radio at all times.
  • Follow all policies and procedures outlined in the Operations Manual when operating a College owned, leased or personal vehicle at any time while performing duties. Report any driving offense, on or off company time, which causes a loss, suspension, or any other change in your license status within one business day of the offense to the Human Resource Department or your direct supervisor.
  • Maintain a clean work area and an adequate inventory of all shop supplies and equipment.
  • Attend training sessions as required.
  • Supervise employees of a lower level.
  • Perform related duties as required.
