About The Position

The employee supports the multi-shift operations of the Maintenance Department by providing administrative, organizational, and special project support using a broad spectrum of computer applications. Superior human relations and communication skills - both oral and written - are employed daily through interaction with the public and with Montgomery Water Works employees in all departments. An in-depth knowledge of the City of Montgomery and Montgomery County road infrastructure is critical to employee's ability to effectively and efficiently schedule the workload for multiple service crews. Flexibility is a key trait as work tasks will vary significantly throughout the course of the shift. The employee must also apply considerable independent judgment in a broad range of operational situations based on knowledge gained through training and experience. Self-motivation and the ability to work unsupervised is an absolute must in this demanding maintenance environment. Variable shift work as well as overtime is required. Reports to the Asset Management Specialist.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of computer operations and standard software packages such as word processing and spreadsheets.
  • Knowledge of basic inventory processes.
  • Skill in understanding and following a variety of complex oral and written communications.
  • Skill in communicating effectively with customers, coworkers, supervisors, contractors, and the public using standard business English and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Skill in operating all standard office and communication equipment.
  • Skill in producing superior work in a multi-tasked environment under time and circumstance constraints.
  • Ability to learn Montgomery Water Works asset and road infrastructures.
  • Ability to learn Maintenance and Customer Service procedures and practices for both Water and Wastewater services.
  • Ability to learn the basic functions of all MWW Departments/Areas and the assets they control.
  • Ability to learn standard Water Works oral and written communication procedures and practices.
  • Ability to accurately identify and input data into appropriate programs as well as extract required data from the same programs.
  • Ability to identify the appropriate individual/Department who can respond to issues within as well as outside of MWW Maintenance's purview.
  • Ability to learn software applications within a specified timeframe.
  • Ability to troubleshoot minor computer hardware and software issues in person and over the phone.
  • Ability to evaluate meter components.
  • Ability to stock and retrieve inventory.
  • Ability to work extended hours as needed to support Maintenance Operations.
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or GED equivalency.
  • Have and maintain a current valid driver's license and a good driving record.
  • Ability to speak, hear and see within normal ranges and tones.
  • Ability to lift and carry 25 pounds up to 25 feet.
  • Ability to do sedentary work, such as viewing a computer monitor, entering data, or monitoring phones for extended periods.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field from an accredited college or university or 6 years of equivalent training/experience.
  • Experience working in a maintenance facility or similar environment.
  • Experience in the water distribution and/or wastewater collection industry.
  • Experience with utility software packages.
  • Experience with mapping software.
  • Experience as a dispatcher

Responsibilities

  • Continuously monitor and promptly respond to all email, telephone and other forms of communication, dispatching crews when appropriate.
  • Prioritize and dispatch work requests using maps, data, equipment/personnel availability, task schedules, computer applications, and other information.
  • Research, document, and resolve customer issues ranging from illegal consumption to billing complaints.
  • Research, document, and resolve work order and asset discrepancies.
  • Coordinate with outside agencies and internal crews for emergencies.
  • Notify management of breaks, overflows, scheduled nighttime work, and other events deemed significant.
  • Create and close maintenance and customer service work orders.
  • Perform quality control of field completed work to ensure data accuracy.
  • Identify corrective actions for inaccuracies, as needed.
  • Locate assets for MWW employees using applicable software programs.
  • Perform basic administrative functions such as preparing correspondence, answering telephones, and other receptionist activities.
  • Backfill various positions during periods of heavy workload or worker unavailability.
  • Assist crews with minor computer issues.
  • Subject to daily overtime as required to complete work orders and other job-related duties.
  • Support special projects.
  • Provide communication and computer support for MWW employees working late.
  • Generate reports.
  • Complete computer tasks such as video download and linkage, data updates, geocoding, generic work assignments, etc.
  • Complete warehouse and meter shop tasks.
