About The Position

The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry (ODAFF) is seeking a full time Livestock Inspector in the Animal Industry Division. This position (PIN #04000280) is in state government, located in Sequoyah and adjacent counties in Oklahoma. The State of Oklahoma offers a comprehensive Benefits Package , including a generous benefit allowance to offset the cost of insurance premiums for employees and their eligible dependents. The hourly pay for this position is up to $23.21 based on education and experience. Basic Purpose/Position Description: Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities involving planning, conducting, and coordinating agriculture operations in an assigned area or district to ensure compliance with applicable federal and state laws, rules, and regulations and to provide protection for consumers and others within the industry. Responsibilities include performing inspections, reporting, samplings, and surveys, and investigations. Level Descriptor: This position is for a Livestock Inspector I, which is the introductory level.

Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of livestock species and breeds is essential.
  • Experience in handling livestock is important.
  • Ability to communicate with farmers, ranchers, livestock auction market owners, veterinarians is very important.
  • Ability to utilize computers and electronic programs is essential as well.
  • Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of a bachelor’s degree in an agricultural, biological, plant, animal, physical or natural science, food technology, or a closely related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Traveling to livestock auction markets to verify livestock are being handled and records are being kept to insure Animal Disease Traceability.
  • Inspections of Farmed Cervidae facilities, feral swine facilities, aquaculture facilities, and others
  • Testing of livestock, including poultry, swine, cattle, horses, and others
  • Contacting producers to find information related to disease investigations and epidemiological investigations
  • Assisting veterinarians and other personnel in handling livestock
