About The Position

The Livestock Farmer reports directly to the Livestock Manager. They will be an integral part of the livestock operations in collaboration with the Livestock Director, Livestock Manager and Livestock Team. This is a role in which at least one season of previous farm or livestock experience is required. We seek an individual who understands the nature and pace of regenerative, multi-species grazing operations, who is organized and can work autonomously. Attention to detail, careful observation, workflow efficiency, and general tech. skills are all essential to this role. The Livestock Farmer will work across all of our animal groups and will contribute to the collection/organization of data on our various livestock focused research projects. This position requires a basic understanding of livestock farming and a willingness to utilize various interfaces (ArcGIS, Excel, etc.) to help record and organize a rigorous set of data. The Livestock Farmer will work within an integrated team of farmers, researchers and other experts to further the development of a resilient agro-ecological system. They will explore symbiotic relationships between animals, plants, and soil ecology; while contributing to farm innovation, research, and experimentation.

Requirements

  • At least one season of experience in livestock production or another type of farming
  • A basic understanding of pasture based livestock production
  • A willingness to utilize ArcGIS, Google Work Space, and other programs for data collection
  • A valid driver’s license and a willingness to operate RTV’s and pickup trucks on the farm.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team
  • A willingness to work and learn with an integrated team of farmers, researchers, and chefs
  • A willingness to work in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Professional maturity and strong communication skills
  • Ability to be a respectful team member, contributing to a positive work environment

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the daily care and management of all animal groups; including feeding, watering, fencing, rotating, herding, weighing, catching, loading, sorting, and treating animals.
  • Help maintain fencing, water, feeding systems, and associated tools in an organized manner
  • As directed, assist in the data collection process (i.e.tracking daily feedings, animal movements, herd checks etc.).
  • Assist in low-stress flock/herd checks, breeding checks, and slaughter selections
  • As directed, collect and archive the necessary data for the various farm research project
  • Assist with maintenance schedules on machinery including trucks, tractors, and RTV’s
  • Participate in the research and development associated with the various farm enterprises.
  • Participate in livestock educational programs, tours, and events with our partners from Blue Hill.
  • Communicate and work effectively across departments in a collaborative team environment.
  • Other related assignments as necessary.
