The Nebraska Department of Agriculture is currently seeking a Livestock Inspector to joint their team. This is a field position in western Nebraska, working to enforce the state and federal laws and regulations for the movement, sale, and health conditions of livestock. Requirements

  • Post high school coursework/training in agriculture, plant/animal or natural sciences, or other program related field OR a vocation certificate in electrical, mechanical, engineering or other program related field. AND Two years’ experience working in a relevant discipline. Any equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • This position requires travel. As such the incumbent must be able to present a valid driver's license.
  • Regular and Reliable attendance is required.
  • Experience handling and maintaining livestock equipment including hydraulic and fluid pump systems.
  • Good oral communication with producers and veterinarians.
  • Written communication for emails and summaries of inspections.
  • Basic computer skills in Microsoft office.
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment.
  • Knowledge of livestock producers in the area.
  • Experience handling livestock.
  • Knowledge of Livestock Markets.
  • Ability to walk on rough terrain.
  • Ability to maintain composure in occasionally stressful situations with disgruntled producers.

  • College education with a focus in agriculture.
  • Current knowledge of the agricultural industry in western NE.
  • Working relationship with livestock producers in western NE.
  • Knowledge of significant disease issues facing NE livestock.

Responsibilities

  • Maintenance, trouble shooting, and repair of livestock handling and depopulation equipment.
  • Inspecting livestock markets, livestock facilities, and rendering facilities to determine compliance with laws and regulations for the control and eradication of contagious and infectious diseases.
  • Following up on imported livestock to ensure the import requirements are met.
  • Assisting with animal testing and sample collection to ensure that livestock disease status is maintained.
  • Assisting producers with bio security plans and animal disease response
