About The Position

As Litigation Paralegal for medical malpractice litigation, provides advanced legal and administrative support, including assisting in the investigation, management, and defense of medical malpractice claims and lawsuits; preparing legal documents; organizing case materials and maintaining litigation data; and ensuring timely and accurate communication between internal and external stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Five years of experience as a paralegal in civil litigation, preferably in medical malpractice, healthcare law, or insurance defense.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and case management software.
  • Strong understanding of litigation processes, document management, and legal terminology.
  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion in handling sensitive information.
  • The ability to manage complex, high-volume cases within a large academic healthcare environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Paralegal certificate from an accredited program preferred.
  • Experience in a hospital or healthcare system legal department or law firm handling healthcare litigation.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical record (EMR) systems such as Epic or Cerner.
  • Experience with claims or risk management systems (e.g., RLDatix, RiskMaster, Origami Risk, Legal Tracker).
  • Knowledge of rules of civil procedure, healthcare laws, regulations, and medical terminology.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates closely with in-house counsel, outside defense counsel, and leaders across Risk Management, Quality, Patient Safety, and Insurance Services to ensure accurate evaluation and effective handling of complex medical malpractice matters.
  • Provides comprehensive litigation support to in-house and outside counsel in managing medical malpractice claims and lawsuits.
  • Drafts, proofreads, and prepares legal correspondence, pleadings, discovery requests and responses, and subpoenas.
  • Reviews and summarizes medical records, depositions, and expert reports.
  • Organizes, maintains, and updates electronic and paper case files, including medical records and exhibits.
  • Coordinates the collection, review, and production of documents for discovery and subpoenas, ensuring compliance with applicable privacy and confidentiality standards.
  • Maintains accurate case data in Emory's claims management system, generates reports and assists with claims analytics.
  • Tracks litigation deadlines, hearings, and other case milestones to ensure compliance with court rules and procedures.
  • Supports trial preparation, including assembly of exhibits, witness lists, and trial binders.
  • Communicates effectively with internal departments, outside counsel, insurance representatives, and other stakeholders.
  • Assists attorneys with special projects, audits, and administrative tasks, as needed.
  • Works closely with legal teammates, executives and operational leaders to implement practical solutions.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required.
