CenterPoint Energy is looking for a Line Specialist Apprentice to join our Electric Distribution Operations Team, located in Evansville, IN. You will have the ability to: work in an entry level position which will qualify a person for advancement into Distribution Electric Operations skilled work. A successful candidate will be required to perform general labor and receive training under the direct supervision of a First Class Line Specialist (Journeyman Lineman). The labor is performed to assist in the construction and maintenance of high voltage electrical systems and will require working outside in sometimes harsh weather conditions. Candidate will be required to be available to work overtime.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Attended and graduated from a technical trade school with a line worker’s certificate
  • CDL preferred
  • Work experience in construction, skilled trades or maintenance of high voltage electrical systems, in an outside environment preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the construction, maintenance, relocation, diagnosis of problems and repair of primary and/or secondary voltage electrical facilities in a safe, efficient, and focused manner.
  • Work as directed to assist in the restoration of power in the event of a storm. Required to remain in the Greater Houston area during emergency events and remain available for extended shift work during all hours of day and night.
  • Maintain prompt attendance and perform duties on a variety of shifts and schedules including holidays, weekends and evenings. Must be able to respond 24/7 in emergency situations and work in all types of weather.
  • Able to operate company vehicles safely and in compliance with applicable laws and company policies.
  • Able to interpret blueprints, work orders, manuals, and other technical material related to the performance of the job.
  • Must satisfactorily demonstrate ability to climb poles.
  • Must successfully complete all physical job tests, including any tests required to obtain a Commercial Driver's license.
  • Must be able to pass Company medical evaluation and must be able to distinguish colors, have depth perception, and be able to hear instructions or warnings from a person stationed on construction equipment.
  • Must be able to endure strenuous physical exertion and have the dexterity to utilize hand and power tools.
  • Must have the ability to lift, push, pull and lower loads manually and using blocks and rope.
  • Must have the ability to walk, stand, bend, stoop, and kneel for long periods of time.
  • Must have the ability to reach and work over head for long periods of time.
  • Required to climb poles and steel structures at heights of fifty feet (50) or greater to perform maintenance, removal and installation of poles, transformers, line conductors, etc.
  • Must have the ability to work from aerial devices up to 200 ft.
  • Must be able to perform job duties in variable conditions including but not limited to all types of weather and all times of the day or night.
  • May be required to remain in the service area during emergency events and assume responsibilities assigned by the company to aide in restoration efforts.
  • Must demonstrate commitment to compliance with applicable laws and regulations, the Company's Ethics and Compliance Code, and other Company policies and procedures, and take all required training courses.
  • Must demonstrate respect for all individuals and adhere to the Company's values and business practices.
  • All applicants must take a pre-employment drug test and obtain a negative result as a condition of employment.
  • In addition to a pre-employment test, employees performing job functions regulated by the Department of Transportation (i.e. safety-sensitive functions) are subject to random drug and/or alcohol testing. Other testing (post-accident, reasonable cause, return-to-duty, follow-up, or return-to-work) may be required in accordance with work-related conditions.
