About The Position

Each guard is responsible for knowing and enforcing all pool & waterfront rules at all times. Be in uniform and stationed in the lifeguard chair or walking-alert at all times. Negligence of this duty will be cause for a written reprimand and/or dismissal. Be on time. Be responsible and punctual to your schedule. On duty means "on the deck". Excessive tardiness and/or absence result in warning and/or dismissal. Acquire proper coverage in your absence. Dress in proper and required attire while on duty. Follow through on assignments as required i.e. teaching waterfront activities. All notices placed on the bulletin board in the office are your responsibility and for your information. Please read notices and act accordingly. Establish and maintain good relationships with participants. Attendance at staff meetings and in house training is mandatory. Staff shall conduct themselves in a mature and responsible manner, which commands respect from participants and other staff. All staff are expected to follow Santa Monica Family YMCA policies and procedures for employees. It is prohibited to solicit or receive direct payment for services rendered. Employees may not accept financial or cash gifts from camp guests. Must maintain a safe environment for both staff and participants during scheduled activities. Other duties may be assigned such as, assisting in the kitchen, housekeeping and general maintenance. Guards may be required to drive the camp boat at times. If so, training will be provided prior to operating the vessel. Maintain a professional working relationship with camp staff at all times. Communicate all concerns with camp staff, lease group, and program participants directly to Camp Director in a timely manner. AQUATIC SAFETY & DAILY MAINTENANCE: Keep all aquatic areas clean on a daily basis. Follow all opening and closing for the pool and waterfront area as outlined in the "Opening and closing procedures document." Pick up equipment and place it in its proper storage area. Assure that all YMCA, State and County rules and regulations, and CAL-OSHA standards for safe operation are enforced at the Pool & Waterfront daily. Take accurate people counts as required. Report unsafe conditions/malfunctioning equipment to your supervisor immediately. Assure first-aid kits are fully stocked before aquatic areas can be opened. All staff shall enforce safety rules and set good examples for YMCA participants. Assure a safe environment in the pool area at all times.

Requirements

  • Current Lifeguarding with waterfront, CPR/First Aid/AED and Bloodborne Pathogens certifications by a nationally recognized certifying body
  • At least 16 years of age
  • Be able to sit or stand while guarding for extended periods of time-alert at all times
  • Demonstrate good verbal skills in communicating with participants, and staff
  • Must be able to respond to any given emergency and know how to use emergency equipment
  • Guards must be able to pass the "Lifeguard Skills Verification" test before hire
  • Have a genuine interest in people and the ability to establish harmonious relationships with participants, and staff is needed
  • Dedication and ability to take instruction and follow through, problem solve, work well with others, resources and equipment is required
  • Must be mature, flexible, adaptable, and strong verbal and written communication skills are essential
  • Must be able to stand, sit, walk, run, climb stairs, squat, kneel, bend, and paddle for extended periods of time while on duty
  • Must be able to safely lift more than 50 lbs while launching, storing, and assisting campers with kayaks, canoes, stand up paddleboards, and peddle boats
  • Must be able to safely withstand exposure to the mountain elements which include sun, wind, rain and any weather that may come about in the mountains while on duty
