About The Position

Chaminade College Preparatory seeks a service oriented Library Assistant at our high school in West Hills, California. Duties and Responsibilities: Assists in the day-to-day administration and maintenance of both the physical and virtual library spaces. Assists students and teachers in utilizing a wide array of print and digital resources, technology, and electronic equipment. Performs a variety of duties relative to the acquisition, processing, circulation, and maintenance of print materials and equipment. Helps create, update, and maintain content for the library website, digital displays, and contributes to library social media. Provides readers' advisory services. Coordinates and trains parent volunteers, provides input for library goals, assists in collection development, supports librarian in his/her duties, and oversees library in absence of librarian. Assists in collection development: Prepares materials (print and eBooks, magazines, equipment, etc.) for circulation (cataloging, processing); maintains and updates MARC records; creates reports; assists with inventory and weeding; suggests materials for purchase. Serves students and teachers: Includes circulation of materials; tech support (printing, simple troubleshooting of laptop problems, etc.); individual instruction (using the databases, searching the online library catalog and the Internet, preparing documents for printing, using copier and other equipment, etc.); supervises students; proctors tests; manages library in librarian's absence. Clerical duties: Maintains library calendars; creates overdue lists and other reports; replacement ID cards (includes creating ID cards, managing the software, importing student photos, maintaining equipment, record keeping); telephone; submits work orders; contacts vendors; assists with bookkeeping; creates/maintains email contact groups; other clerical duties as assigned. Physical space: Creates displays; takes initiative in keeping the library clean (occasional vacuuming, cleaning windows, tables, counters, etc., as needed); shelves books/magazines and keeps bookshelves in order; keeps storage cabinets, drawers, supplies, files, and work areas neat and organized. Virtual space: Contributes content for the digital displays. Website: Assists in updating content, ensures that links are active, databases work properly, etc. Regularly posts to the library's social media sites. Assists in updating library management program and online catalog. Coordinates parent volunteers (recruitment, training, record keeping, directs tasks, etc.). Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of library practices.
  • Excellent computer skills with an ability to apply existing knowledge to learn new computer apps, programs, technology.
  • Highly proficient in PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and familiar with basic digital photo/video editing.
  • Knowledge of printers and printing in multiple formats and media (labels, cardstock, photo paper, etc.).
  • Proficient in use of email, including setting up groups, calendars, contacts, importing/exporting, etc.
  • Adept at using a smartphone and smartphone apps.
  • Enthusiastic about and possesses a basic knowledge of current YA literature, authors, trends.
  • Familiarity with digital citizenship (ex. web research, citing sources, cybersafety, copyright, plagiarism, etc.).

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's Degree preferred
  • Prior library experience preferred
  • Familiarity with databases (creating queries, importing/exporting) a plus.
