About The Position

The Tennessee State Library & Archives (TSLA) collects and preserves books and records of historical, documentary and reference value, and encourages and promotes library development throughout the state. In addition, TSLA also operates a free library program of braille, audio books, and large print materials for residents of Tennessee who are not able to use standard print materials due to a print disability. The Reader Advisor will perform para-professional work of considerable difficulty, assisting library patrons with book selection.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Equivalent education and/or experience may be substituted for education requirement.
  • Must possess a working knowledge of authors, titles, and popular literature.
  • Commitment to providing excellent customer service.
  • Warm and professional manner in dealing with coworkers, volunteers, and the public in person, via telephone, and by email.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Possess the interpersonal skills to work within the structure of state government and represent TSLA and its programs.
  • Ability to perform high volume, repetitive tasks accurately and with close attention to detail.
  • Ability to plan and organize tasks in order to complete assigned duties in a timely manner, including the delegation of work to volunteers.
  • Ability to be a positive influence within the building and section.
  • Ability to adapt to change.
  • Ability to organize and maintain paper and electronic records.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of patron files.
  • Ability to read and assimilate multi-digit numbers, including performing detailed data entry accurately and efficiently.
  • Ability to operate handheld scanners and USB drives effectively.
  • Ability to use job-related software effectively.
  • Ability to work in stacks environment with books that contain dust and other allergens.
  • Ability to simultaneously use telephone and computer system for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to stand or sit for long periods of time.
  • Assist the organization in creating a safe and healthy working environment by working safely with the equipment provided.
  • Follow instructions given for health and safety purposes and immediately report any unsafe working practices or hazardous working conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain patron files in library’s automated systems.
  • Maintain patron request lists at adequate levels.
  • Perform reviews of patron files, contacting patrons when necessary, to ensure accurate, information and levels of requests.
  • Select books for patrons that comply with their interests, using bibliographic tools.
  • Answer questions about services provided to persons with disabilities and makes referrals to agencies providing those services.
  • Correspond with library patrons and family members by phone, e-mail, fax, and in person.
  • Respond to patron requests for books, magazines, and equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Benefits

  • $45,000 annually plus the State of Tennessee benefits package.
