About The Position

The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office is seeking a highly organized, detail-oriented Legal Support Assistant to support attorneys assigned to the Initial Appearance Court (IAC). This position plays a critical role in ensuring that prosecutors have accurate, complete, and timely information to make meaningful bond and release-condition recommendations that protect public safety and ensure court appearance. The Legal Support Assistant works closely with law enforcement agencies and internal MCAO personnel in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment where accuracy, professionalism, and independent judgment are essential. This position performs a variety of entry-level specialized clerical support duties of limited complexity with established guidelines and procedures within the justice system.

Requirements

  • One year of experience performing specialized clerical and customer service duties
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Post-secondary education may substitute for the minimum experience on a year-for-year basis

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a primary point of contact between Initial Appearance Court attorneys, law enforcement agencies, and internal MCAO units to gather and relay critical case information prior to initial appearance proceedings
  • Communicate directly with law enforcement officers and agency representatives to ensure probable cause statements are complete, thorough, and legally sufficient for court presentation
  • Conduct criminal history and background checks on defendants, including reviewing prior convictions, probation or parole status, warrants, and failures to appear, and promptly relay relevant information to assigned prosecutors
  • Assist attorneys in identifying aggravating factors relevant to bond and release conditions, including prior violent offenses, repeat offenses, weapons involvement, and non-compliance with court orders
  • Organize case files for close-out and storage; enter case disposition and close-out information into the Maricopa County Attorney's Office internal database
  • Enter and retrieve case information from various databases, including the Motor Vehicle Department, Justice Court database, Superior Court database, among others
  • Research case files for the court calendar and file documents with the court
  • Maintain a current Terminal Operator Certification with the Department of Public Safety
  • Provide reception relief/coverage; answer multi-line telephone - answer general information questions, transfer calls, and take messages
  • Review electronic minute entry folder; retrieve and distribute electronic pleadings and minute entries
  • Type subpoenas
  • Update the discovery log, upload the discovery, and scan documents
  • Sort and distribute incoming mail
  • Scan documents into MCAO’s case management system
