About The Position

The Legal Clerk provides critical administrative and operational support to the United States Attorney’s Office (USAO) Fact Witness Program. This role focuses on coordinating witness logistics, managing documentation and reimbursements, and ensuring the efficient participation of fact witnesses in federal legal proceedings. The position directly supports Assistant U.S. Attorneys (AUSAs), Victim-Witness personnel, and other legal staff by handling high-volume clerical and coordination tasks essential to the federal judicial process.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED (associate’s or bachelor’s degree preferred)
  • U.S. citizenship (required for federal contract work)
  • Minimum of 2 years of administrative or clerical experience, including: Travel coordination, Expense processing or reimbursements, File and database management
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills
  • Ability to manage sensitive situations and interact with individuals under stress
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in standard office software; ability to learn government systems quickly

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a legal, government, or law enforcement environment
  • Familiarity with federal travel regulations or payment systems
  • Knowledge of legal terminology and court procedures

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for fact witnesses before, during, and after court proceedings.
  • Coordinate and confirm witness appearances for: Court hearings, Pre-trial conferences, Grand jury proceedings
  • Communicate travel details, schedules, and expectations to witnesses.
  • Identify and escalate special witness circumstances (e.g., international, military, or high-risk witnesses) to appropriate legal staff.
  • Arrange and coordinate witness travel, lodging, and related logistics in compliance with DOJ policies.
  • Ensure all travel documentation is completed and provided prior to witness appearances.
  • Meet witnesses upon arrival and provide courtroom orientation and guidance.
  • Maintain awareness of safety and comfort needs for witnesses during court processes.
  • Prepare, review, and submit witness vouchers and reimbursement documentation.
  • Reconcile government travel accounts and ensure accuracy of financial records.
  • Track status of payments and respond to inquiries regarding reimbursements.
  • Ensure compliance with federal travel regulations and internal procedures.
  • Maintain and organize witness files, records, and databases.
  • Track court dates, hearings, and scheduling changes.
  • Draft correspondence and standard legal-related communications.
  • Perform data entry, document preparation, and records management.
  • Support general office operations related to witness management.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including: U.S. Marshals Service Probation and Pretrial Services Courts and investigative agencies
  • Facilitate communication and coordination across agencies as needed.
